Psychiatric technicians collaborate with doctors and nurses to execute care plans for patients and to ensure a safe, healthy environment for the patients in their care. The job duties of a psychiatric technician are to provide hands-on, therapeutic care to patients, monitor patients’ vital signs, and administer medication. Hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other medical facilities hire psychiatric technicians.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a psychiatric technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Psychiatric Technician, you need knowledge of mental health disorders, basic medical care, and typically a postsecondary certificate or associate degree in psychiatric or mental health technology. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), crisis intervention techniques, and safety protocols is essential. Psychiatric Technicians often encounter patients who may exhibit unpredictable or challenging behaviors, such as aggression or emotional outbursts. Managing these situations requires strong communication skills, patience, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Building rapport with patients, following established safety protocols, and collaborating closely with nurses and mental health professionals are essential strategies. Ongoing training in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques also helps technicians handle difficult scenarios more effectively.
