What is the selection process?

Applicants will be reviewed in the order they are submitted. All applications must be submitted before June 4, 2026, at which point candidates will be contacted to schedule a testing time for June 10, 2026. Provo's testing process consists of a physical fitness test (PT), a written exam, and an oral interview.

If selected for hire, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check prior to appointment. Non-disclosure will result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.

Physical Fitness Test: Provo's PT test matches the Utah POST entrance requirements, shown below. If you have passed this test in the last 3 months, you may email a certified copy of your scores to recruit@provo.gov. If not, you will be contacted to register for Provo's upcoming PT.

  • Vertical Jump (at least 15 inches)

  • Push-Ups (at least 16 Reps - Maximum repetitions with no time constraint and no rest during this phase of the test)

  • Isometric Plank (held for one minute)

  • 1.5 Mile Run (in 15 minutes and 37 seconds or less)

Written Exam: Provo currently uses the National Police Officer Selection Test (NPOST). If you have passed the NPOST in the last 6 months, and wish to be excused from it, you may email a certified copy of your scores to recruit@provo.gov by June 3, 2026 .If not, you will be scheduled to sit for Provo's next sponsored written exam.

Oral Interview: All successful, eligible candidates will be invited to participate in Provo's in-person, structured oral interview. No remote interviews are allowed at this time.

Date(s)/Time(s): TBD - Typically held within a week of the Physical and Written Exams.

Command Staff Interview: Candidates who successfully complete all parts of the testing process will be placed on the hiring eligibility list. Those who rank high enough will be contacted for an interview with the Command Staff and/or Chief of Police.

NOTE: Candidates who have served on active duty in any branch of the United States Military for at least 6 months can submit their form DD-214 to recruit@provo.gov to receive preference points in the testing process.

What are the main duties? (Click here for the full classification specification)

  • Enforce all State of Utah, Provo City, and Utah County laws.

  • Actively seek out and detect criminal activity.

  • Assist the public.

  • Respond to emergencies and alarms.

  • Assist other staff members as needed and perform other related duties as required.


What are the minimum qualifications?

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • A valid, lawful Driver License.

  • Applicant must be 21 years of age by completion of POST Academy.

  • United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States (who has been in the United States legally for 5 years and has legal authorization to work in the United States).

  • Applicant must obtain Utah State Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Law Enforcement Officer Certificate during probationary period.
