Job Summary and Qualifications

This role is an integral position within HCA Healthcare’s Risk & Insurance department. This position supports the Insurance Programs segment of the Risk & Insurance Department and assists the team in an on-going effort to design and maintain an efficient, responsive customer oriented corporate insurance program. The primary role of this position will be oversight of all Property Claims, including reduction of claim cycle times and enhancement of loss costs capture accuracy. This includes oversight of HCA’s property claims handling via coordination between HCA facility contacts, corporate functional areas, Third Party Administrator (TPA), forensic accountants, broker claims representative and captive insurer/fronting parties. In addition to claims handling this position will be responsible for analyzing property risk exposure, participating in disaster preparedness and organization of pre-loss response strategy. The position will also assist with multi-line insurance procurement, primarily property insurance and related lines.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Proactively manage system-wide property claims including oversight of between HCA facility contacts, corporate functional areas, Third Party Administrator (TPA), forensic accountants, broker claims representative and captive insurer/fronting parties. Focus is on fair and expedited resolution.
  • Evaluate third-party administrator performance and relationships.
  • Coordinate with HCA Emergency Preparedness department to build strategy for potential incident and CAT response.
  • Analyze loss trends and provide recommendations for risk avoidance and loss mitigation.
  • Assist with providing accurate and timely data enhancement on the property database with our broker and risk information management vendor(s).
  • Manage the ongoing data integrity efforts including the audits of various insurance database exposures.
  • Manages the vendor scorecards as a means of maintaining third party insurance vendor relationships and participates in the broker and vendor selection process.
  • Participate and assist in the underwriting process for procurement and maintenance of the corporate-placed insurance programs, to include all risk property, auto and workers’ compensation, etc.
  • Secures broker binders that validate coverage. Catalogs and maintains the policies of insurance and maintains the electronic system for policy storage. Reviews all policies and endorsements to confirm contract certainty.
  • Review and advise Corporate and field colleagues on appropriate insurance and indemnification contract language.
  • Oversees workers’ compensation self-insurance filings and assessments.
  • Supervises the property claims team within the department and setting forth appropriate ongoing industry training.
  • Manages the property insurance claims bordereau on a monthly basis in accordance with finance.
  • Work with HCA Facilities staff on pre-loss mitigation and risk management strategies.
  • Work with facilities that experience loss through the claim process, to help ensure mitigation of loss costs and efficient resolution/repair of damages.
  • Work with facilities and our TPA to ensure loss costs are timely and property documented, to help ensure timely and accurate coverage reimbursement.
  • Work with our TPA to ensure claims are being proactively managed, accurately documented and timely presented to carriers for coverage reimbursement.
  • Work with our Business Intelligence team to develop and then will independently manage property claims within our claims system.
  • Investigate, develop and implement technology options (as appropriate) to make the claim process more efficient: i.e. AI, machine learning, and automation.
  • Help set and advance a long-term vision of property claim handling.
  • Help develop and maintain an appropriate oversight reporting process to give leadership and other necessary departments clarity into property claim exposures.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 10+ years of experience in directly handling large, complex commercial property claims required
  • 5+ years of experience in handling complex commercial property CAT claims (i.e. hurricane, earthquake, critical flood) required
  • Excellent communication, organizational, computer and presentation skills required
  • Strong experience working with contractors, construction managers, building consultants, contents vendors, environmental vendors, TPAs, etc. required
  • Expert ability to write large, complex commercial property repair estimates using one or more of the industry’s leading estimating tools required
  • Experience working with TPA to provide oversight of large, complex commercial claim handling required
  • Experience managing commercial property claim-related experts and vendors required
  • Experience evaluating contracts to ensure appropriate insurance, defense and indemnity requirements required
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and applying policy coverage to a given loss scenario required
  • Experience with the successful development of claim handling process and workflows preferred
  • Experience participating on and/or leading CAT commercial property claim teams preferred
  • Experience building collaborative relationships within an organization to facilitate pre-loss risk management and loss mitigation program implementation preferred
  • Experience designing, implementing, and leading water loss mitigation programs preferred
  • Experience working with claim system development and vendor system integration preferred

Licenses, Certifications, & Training:

  • Insurance Certification (i.e. AIC, CPCU, etc.) preferred
  • Property & Casualty Insurance Broker License preferred
  • FL and/or TX adjuster license (May be obtained in first 90 days as criteria of employment) required
