Can I become a proofreader with no experience?

Proofreading is the process of reviewing and correcting written content to eliminate errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting. Many entry-level proofreading jobs do not require prior professional experience, especially if you have strong language skills and attention to detail. You can start by improving your grammar and writing proficiency, practicing with sample texts, and possibly taking free or low-cost online courses to build your skills. Some employers may require a short test or sample proofread, but overall, it's possible to begin a proofreading career without previous experience.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a proofreader with no experience?

To thrive as a Proofreader without prior experience, you need a strong grasp of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and attention to detail, often demonstrated through education or strong language skills. Familiarity with word processing software like Microsoft Word or Google Docs, and style guides such as AP or Chicago Manual of Style, is typically expected. Strong communication, time management, and a willingness to learn help you stand out in entry-level proofreading roles. These skills ensure accuracy, efficiency, and the ability to meet deadlines, which are critical for delivering polished and error-free content.

What are common challenges faced by entry-level proofreaders, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level proofreaders often face challenges such as adapting to different style guides, managing tight deadlines, and maintaining concentration over long periods. To overcome these, it's helpful to familiarize yourself with commonly used style guides (like AP or Chicago), develop effective time-management strategies, and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue. Additionally, seeking feedback from more experienced colleagues and using digital tools to catch overlooked errors can greatly enhance your proofreading accuracy and confidence.

What is the difference between Proofreading No Experience vs Copy Editor?

AspectProofreading No ExperienceCopy Editor

CertificationsNone typically requiredOften preferred to have editing or writing certifications
Work EnvironmentFreelance, entry-level positions, remote or officePublishing houses, media companies, agencies

Proofreading No Experience roles focus on basic error correction and are suitable for beginners. Copy Editors handle more complex editing tasks, including style and content refinement, often requiring prior experience or certifications. While both roles involve editing, Proofreading No Experience is ideal for those starting out, whereas Copy Editor positions demand a higher skill level and experience.

Are proofreaders still in demand?

Proofreaders are still in demand as many industries require quality control for written content, including publishing, marketing, and academic fields. The role often involves working remotely and requires strong language skills and attention to detail, with some positions requiring familiarity with editing tools or style guides.

How do I get hired as a proofreader?

To get hired as a proofreader, develop strong language and grammar skills, often through self-study or courses, and build a portfolio of sample work. Many employers require familiarity with editing tools like Microsoft Word or Google Docs, and some prefer candidates with certifications such as the Certified Proofreader credential. Entry-level positions may be available with no experience if you demonstrate attention to detail and a good command of language during the application process.

Description

Administrative Assistant | Supporting Those Who Serve Others

Wellspring Lutheran Services – New Directions, Livonia | Full-Time | Hourly $16.50

You may not be the person providing direct services to children and families, but you understand that meaningful work requires a strong foundation.

You know that when schedules are organized, information is accurate, phones are answered, resources are available, and staff have the support they need, programs can focus on what matters most—serving children, strengthening families, and changing lives.

By staying organized, solving problems, and helping others navigate daily responsibilities, you help create the foundation that allows meaningful work to happen. You understand that behind every successful team is someone helping keep everything running smoothly.

At Wellspring Lutheran Services, we're looking for an Administrative Assistant who understands that great support work creates opportunities for great outcomes.

As an Administrative Assistant, you'll serve as a vital member of our Child & Family Services team, helping staff, families, and community partners navigate the day-to-day details that support important programs and services. You'll often be the first person someone speaks with when they contact our office and one of the key people ensuring operations run efficiently behind the scenes.

Most importantly, your work will help our teams stay focused on supporting children and families throughout the community.

What Your Impact Will Look Like

You'll help create a welcoming and professional environment for families, visitors, and community partners who connect with our programs.

You'll support staff by managing critical administrative processes that help programs operate efficiently and effectively.

You'll help ensure important information is organized, accurate, and available when needed, contributing to quality services and positive outcomes for children and families.

You'll assist with scheduling doctors appointments for our youth, documentation, records management, communications, and office coordination that support the daily work of multiple teams and programs.

You'll become a trusted resource for coworkers, helping solve problems, answer questions, and keep things moving forward in a fast-paced environment.

You'll help manage office resources, donations, supplies, and administrative systems that directly support families receiving services.

Some days you'll be greeting visitors, coordinating appointments, and maintaining records. Other days you'll be helping staff prepare for meetings, managing office operations, organizing donations for families, or ensuring important information reaches the right people at the right time.

Every day, your work will help support the mission of serving children and families.

The Person We're Looking For

  • You enjoy supporting others, interacting with youth and helping teams succeed.
  • You thrive in environments where organization, attention to detail, and problem-solving are valued and needed.
  • You are dependable, professional, and comfortable managing multiple priorities.
  • You enjoy creating positive experiences for customers, clients, and coworkers.
  • You understand the importance of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • You are organized enough to keep track of details while remaining flexible when priorities change.
  • You want your work to contribute to something meaningful.

What You'll Bring

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 1 + year(s) of general office, administrative experience and/or scheduling experience preferred.
  • Strong communication, customer service, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work on projects/tasks and shift focus as needed to urgent responsibilities
  • Skilled and confident with Microsoft Office and web-based, computer applications.
  • Ability to manage confidential information and maintain accuracy in documentation.
  • A positive, team-oriented attitude and a willingness to support others.

Why Wellspring Lutheran Services?

At Wellspring Lutheran Services, every role contributes to our mission of strengthening children, families, and communities.

The work of our direct service staff would not be possible without professionals who provide administrative support, maintain organization, and help ensure programs run smoothly. As an Administrative Assistant, you'll be a valued part of that mission.

Your contributions may happen behind the scenes, but their impact will be felt throughout the organization and by the families we serve.

We Offer

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • 403(b) retirement plan with employer matching
  • Employee Assistance Program (SupportLinc)
  • Professional development opportunities
  • A supportive and collaborative team environment
  • Meaningful work that contributes to stronger children and families

Schedule

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Day shift (8:30am - 4:30pm)
  • No Weekends / No on-call
  • On-site role, daily
