What is a project manager?

Project Managers are professionals responsible for planning, executing, and closing projects within an organization. They coordinate teams, manage resources, set deadlines, and ensure that project goals are achieved on time and within budget. Project Managers communicate with stakeholders, assess risks, and resolve issues that may arise during the project lifecycle. Their role is crucial in ensuring that projects align with business objectives and deliver value.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager, you need strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in project coordination. Familiarity with project management software (such as Microsoft Project, Asana, or Jira) and certifications like PMP or PRINCE2 are highly valued. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and team collaboration abilities set outstanding project managers apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to stakeholder expectations.

How do project managers typically balance multiple projects and competing deadlines?

Project managers often oversee several projects simultaneously, requiring strong organizational and prioritization skills. They use project management tools and methodologies like Agile or Waterfall to track progress, allocate resources, and adjust timelines as needed. Effective communication with team members and stakeholders is essential to identify potential bottlenecks early and reassign tasks or shift priorities when necessary. Regular status meetings and updates help ensure everyone remains aligned, making it easier to deliver projects on time and within scope.

These jobs typically require skills in planning, execution, and time management, and may involve freelance work, contract positions, or temporary employment. Workers in such roles often use project management tools and may need certifications relevant to the industry.

Build More Than Projects. Help Build the Future of USA Renovations.

USA Renovations is a nationwide commercial specialty contractor serving some of the country's largest retail brands. We specialize in ceiling cleaning, exposed structure cleaning, high dusting, interior painting, pressure washing, and specialty facility services performed during active retail remodels across the United States.

We're entering an exciting new chapter.

Over the past year, our leadership team has been intentionally redesigning how we operatefrom our organizational structure and technology platforms to our project delivery processes and operational standards. We're building a high-performing leadership team focused on creating one of the most efficient and process-driven specialty contractors in our industry.

This isn't an opportunity to simply inherit an existing system.

It's an opportunity to help build it.

We're looking for someone who wants to influence operational strategy, improve processes, drive accountability, and become a key member of our leadership team as we continue to grow.

If you're looking for a position where your ideas matter and your decisions directly impact the success of the business, we'd love to talk.

Position Summary

The Operations Project Manager is responsible for the complete operational and financial execution of commercial construction projects from project kickoff through final completion.

This position owns the strategy, planning, scheduling, execution, and financial performance of every assigned project.

You'll develop labor strategies, allocate crews, build production schedules, monitor budgets, protect gross profit margins, and proactively solve operational challenges before they impact project performance.

Success in this role requires balancing customer expectations, field operations, labor efficiency, scheduling, and financial performance simultaneously.

Every operational decision should improve project execution while protecting profitability.

This is not simply a scheduling positionit is a leadership role responsible for delivering projects safely, on time, on budget, and at or above targeted gross profit margins.

Primary Responsibilities

Financial Leadership

  • Own the financial performance of assigned projects from award through closeout
  • Develop labor strategies that maximize efficiency while protecting profitability
  • Monitor budgets, labor costs, lodging, travel, equipment, subcontractor expenses, and production costs
  • Forecast project financial performance throughout execution
  • Identify financial risks early and implement corrective action
  • Collaborate on change order strategy and cost recovery opportunities
  • Drive projects to meet or exceed targeted gross profit margins

Project Planning & Scheduling

  • Develop and maintain master project schedules
  • Coordinate project start dates with customers and field operations
  • Forecast manpower requirements weeks in advance
  • Balance labor resources across multiple active projects

  • Assign crews based on skill set, certifications, availability, and project requirements
  • Maximize crew utilization while minimizing idle time
  • Coordinate travel logistics and project mobilizations
  • Ensure field teams have the resources necessary for successful execution

Project Execution

  • Monitor production across multiple active projects
  • Remove operational obstacles before they impact production
  • Coordinate with Project Coordinators, Field Operations Coordinators, customers, subcontractors, and leadership
  • Ensure projects remain aligned with schedules, budgets, quality expectations, and customer commitments

Operational Leadership

  • Lead production planning meetings
  • Review field reports and production metrics
  • Analyze project performance and operational trends
  • Escalate issues before they become delays or cost overruns
  • Continuously improve processes and execution standards

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Performance in this role is measured through objective operational and financial metrics, including:

  • Gross Profit Margin by Project
  • Budget vs. Actual Labor Cost
  • Crew Utilization Rate
  • Schedule Alignment Accuracy
  • Job Start On-Time Rate
  • Schedule Stability
  • Labor Efficiency
  • Idle Time Reduction
  • Forecast Accuracy

What Success Looks Like

Within your first year, you'll be known for:

  • Building schedules that maximize labor efficiency and minimize downtime
  • Keeping crews productive with very little idle time
  • Anticipating problems before they impact customers or profitability
  • Making confident operational decisions in a fast-moving environment
  • Creating predictable execution across multiple concurrent projects
  • Becoming a trusted operational leader within the organization
  • Helping build scalable systems that support the future growth of USA Renovations

Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of experience managing commercial construction projects, field operations, production, or construction logistics
  • Demonstrated experience managing project budgets and financial performance
  • Strong understanding of labor planning, scheduling, and resource allocation
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously

The Ideal Candidate

You thrive when you're solving complex operational problems.

You're decisive, organized, financially minded, and naturally think several steps ahead.

You understand that successful project management is about much more than simply keeping a scheduleit's about making operational decisions that improve execution, strengthen customer relationships, and protect profitability.

You enjoy leading people, improving systems, and taking ownership of outcomes.

This Position May Not Be a Good Fit If You

  • Struggle making timely decisions
  • Become overwhelmed by constant change
  • Prefer highly repetitive or predictable workdays
  • Avoid accountability or difficult conversations
  • Have difficulty balancing competing priorities
  • Prefer to react to problems rather than anticipate them
