What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Project Planning Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Planning Intern, you need foundational knowledge of project management principles, strong organizational abilities, and typically be pursuing a degree in business, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with project management software such as Microsoft Project, Asana, or Trello, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office, is often expected. Attention to detail, effective communication, and strong time management are essential soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure accurate project tracking, smooth coordination among team members, and the ability to contribute effectively to project goals.

What are some typical challenges a Project Planning Intern might face when coordinating with multiple teams?

As a Project Planning Intern, you may encounter challenges in aligning schedules, priorities, and communication styles across different teams. Coordinating deliverables often requires balancing conflicting deadlines and ensuring that all stakeholders are updated on project progress. Job description

REA is accepting resumes and portfolios from planning and urban design students for a paid internship for our office in Indianapolis, IN. We are open to candidates seeking three-month or six-month to year-long internships.

Submission Deadline: July 1, 2026

F‍all 2026 Internships

Are you looking for a firm where you can grow your skills while working on multi-disciplinary projects? Where you work on projects that helps transform a community and make a lasting impact? Where you work for a firm that believes that all team members, no matter their experience level, can make a difference to our clients, their projects, and our firm. And that through the opportunity, you help REA cultivate a culture of life-long learning and mentorship in support of our own mission. If so, then REA is a place where you should work for your internship!

Overview

As an intern at REA, you will support planners, landscape architects, urban designers, and engineers in producing documents, reports, graphics, and materials for deliverables and community outreach efforts. We have many diverse projects, at many different stages, so you will compile data and conduct research in support of project presentations and deliverables, assist in the preparation of various planning studies, GIS analyses, graphics development and preparation, and other assignments to address project needs. You will also be able to participate in project steering committee and community outreach meetings. You will work under the supervision of a project manager and senior-level team members.

‍‍Capstone Project

Our internship experience includes a capstone project where all interns will develop research or help solve real-world design challenges on a specific topic they select. They are mentored throughout their entire internship by senior staff to develop their Capstone Project. At the conclusion of the program, the interns will present their project and findings with the entire REA studio.

What we’re looking for

Basic qualifications include current enrollment in an accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree program in Urban Planning, Urban Design, or related field. Have strong written and verbal skills and the ability to function well in a collaborative, team-oriented environment. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), and ArcGIS Pro. Those students that will be entering the final year of their degree and desire a six to twelve month internship are strongly encouraged to apply.

How to Apply‍

If you would like to be considered as a candidate for our internship, please submit a cover letter stating your interest and qualifications and a resume; all materials should be in PDF format and the total size of all files should not exceed 20MB. You may also provide a digital link to download your materials. REA is an equal opportunity employer (EO/AA/VEV/Disabled employer) and encourages women and minorities to apply for this position.‍
