JOB SUMMARY
Provide specific project support in order to complete assigned tasks and perform other duties as assigned. Individual will have the opportunity to develop professional and technical skills for their academic development.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform tasks as assigned with accuracy and to completion.
  • Ask questions for clarification when assigned tasks are unfamiliar or new.
  • Maintain accurate record of tasks completed.
  • Ability to manage and maintain large data sets.

PERSONAL WORK TRAITS
  • Ability to read and discern different types of information for assigned tasks.
  • Ability to make basic judgements on work assignments to complete tasks.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • High school or Work Study Student/University student - Performs other duties as assigned.
  • University student - Assists with issuing zoning clearances and sign permits.
  • University student - Assists with answering questions pertaining to zoning and other planning.
  • University student - Assists with reviews of proposed site plans and changes in land use upon request.
  • University student - Assists with providing census and planning information to the general public and governmental agencies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma or currently participating in high school work study program
  • Currently pursuing Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration or closely related field.
  • Valid driver's license is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to operate copier and fax machine •
  • Ability to deal courteously, effectively and efficiently with concerns of the general public •
  • Ability to work independently, and to communicate effectively with other departments and the general public, both written and verbally •
  • General knowledge of office procedures •
  • Basic knowledge of computers and software including Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, Access, etc.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL SKILLS
  • Ability to speak and write effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public, property owners and developers.
  • Ability to drive a car.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work is performed in a standard office environment and conditions with normal work pace and some pressure to meet deadlines.

POST OFFER TESTING REQUIREMENTS
  • The City of Elkhart is a Drug Free Workplace. Therefore, successfully passing a post offer drug screen is required (random drug testing may be conducted after employment).
  • Background checks producing acceptable BMV and criminal history reports required.
