What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager software developer?

To thrive as a Project Manager Software Developer, you need expertise in software development, project management principles, and often a relevant degree or certifications like PMP or Scrum Master. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira, Trello, or Asana), version control systems, and agile methodologies is typically required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you coordinate teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering successful projects on time and within scope, while ensuring high-quality software outcomes.

How do project manager software developers typically balance hands-on coding with project management responsibilities?

Project Manager Software Developers often split their time between technical tasks, such as coding and code reviews, and project management duties like planning, stakeholder communication, and coordinating team workflows. Successfully balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management, clear prioritization, and effective delegation when possible. Many professionals in this hybrid role use agile methodologies and collaborative tools to streamline both development and project oversight. This combination allows them to maintain technical involvement while ensuring projects stay on track and team members are supported.

What is a project manager software developer?

This role involves planning, executing, and overseeing software projects while also contributing directly to the codebase. They coordinate teams, manage timelines, and ensure that project goals are met, all while leveraging their technical skills to solve problems and guide development processes. This hybrid position is ideal for those who have strong technical backgrounds and leadership abilities.

Job description

Location: Juneau or Anchorage, Alaska (required). Occasional travel to client sites within Alaska should be expected. Who We Are

Wostmann and Associates, Inc. (WAI) is an employeeโ€‘owned IT consulting firm headquartered in Juneau, Alaska, with an additional office in Anchorage and remote staff across the Contiguous United States. Founded in 1984, WAI has spent over four decades providing software engineering, technology integration, system analysis, project management, quality assurance, and information security services to state and federal agencies and privateโ€‘sector clients. As a federal HUBZoneโ€‘certified firm, we deliver practical results for our customers through the informed use of information technology and a solid understanding of business needs, culture, and technical environment. We seek people with a combination of programming, consulting, and business experience.

About the Role

We are looking for a highly skilled Senior Technical Project Manager with a strong technical or engineering background to manage a portfolio of client engagements, primarily software development and consulting projects. These engagements vary in size and complexity, with broader oversight on some and direct, handsโ€‘on ownership of larger, more complex initiatives on others. The ideal candidate has experience managing software projects of at least midโ€‘range complexity, particularly within publicโ€‘sector enterprise environments, which represent the majority of our client work. This role works directly with clients and development teams, providing handsโ€‘on technical leadership from solution envisioning through execution.

Depending on the engagement, job duties may include:
  • Manage a portfolio of concurrent client engagements, providing broader oversight on some while taking direct, handsโ€‘on leadership on others.
  • Lead clients through solution envisioning, business process mapping, and technology strategy discussions to help shape product vision.
  • Facilitate requirementsโ€‘gathering sessions (e.g., Joint Application Development, or JAD, sessions) to elicit needs, priorities, and scope directly from stakeholders.
  • Own Agile and iterative delivery ceremonies, including backlog management, sprint planning, and fitโ€‘gap analysis.
  • Manage project scope, schedule, budget, and risk across the full project lifecycle.
  • Lead and mentor internal and clientโ€‘facing development teams, including junior team members.
  • Communicate progress, issues, and recommendations clearly to both technical and nonโ€‘technical stakeholders.
  • Write and review technical documentation, including requirements, specifications, process flows, and test plans.
Competitive compensation package Fullโ€‘time opportunity Medical and dental insurance 401k plan Paid holidays, vacation Required Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent handsโ€‘on technical/engineering experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 8+ years of project or program management experience, including handsโ€‘on experience as a software developer, systems analyst, or technical architect earlier in your career.
  • Demonstrated experience personally facilitating Agile ceremonies (e.g., backlog refinement, sprint planning, JAD sessions), not just overseeing them at a governance level.
  • Demonstrated experience leading clients through solution envisioning and technology strategy, translating business needs into technical designs.
  • Experience managing a portfolio of concurrent engagements, ranging from lighterโ€‘touch oversight to handsโ€‘on ownership of larger, more complex projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new technology stacks, languages, and frameworks, along with the underlying business processes they support.
Soft Skills
  • Strong problemโ€‘solving and criticalโ€‘thinking skills, with the initiative and creativity to identify pragmatic, resultsโ€‘oriented solutions.
  • Excellent communication and relationshipโ€‘building skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively across technical and nonโ€‘technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PMP or related project/program management certification preferred; Scrum/Agile facilitation certifications (e.g., CSM, PSM, PMI-ACP) are a plus.
  • Prior experience as a consultant, particularly on large enterprise software projects.
  • Experience working with State and Federal agencies operating in Alaska.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP, or Oracle Cloud).
  • Graduate degree in a technical, management, or scienceโ€‘related field.
