What is a project manager 1099?

A Project Manager 1099 is an independent contractor who manages projects for a company but is not classified as a traditional employee. The '1099' refers to IRS Form 1099, which is used to report payments made to independent contractors. Project Managers working on a 1099 basis have more flexibility and control over their work schedule, but they are responsible for their own taxes and benefits. They typically handle tasks such as planning, executing, and overseeing projects, just like regular project managers, but operate as self-employed professionals.

How does working as a 1099 project manager differ from a traditional full-time project management role?

As a 1099 Project Manager, you operate as an independent contractor, which means you're responsible for managing multiple clients, defining project scopes, and often handling your own contracts and billing. Unlike traditional full-time roles, you may work remotely or on a flexible schedule, and you'll need to quickly adapt to different organizational cultures and processes. Client interaction often involves more direct communication, as clients rely on your expertise to deliver results without close supervision. This independence offers valuable exposure to diverse industries and can accelerate your professional growth, but it also requires strong self-management and business development skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager 1099?

To thrive as a Project Manager (1099), you need strong project planning, budgeting, and organizational skills, typically supported by a bachelor's degree and relevant project management experience. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Project, Asana, or Trello, and certifications such as PMP or Agile are commonly expected. Exceptional communication, time management, and leadership abilities help contractors build trust and coordinate effectively with diverse clients. These skills ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to client satisfaction in a competitive contract-based environment.

What is the difference between Project Manager 1099 vs Project Coordinator?

The key difference lies in responsibility level and employment type, with Project Manager 1099 being more autonomous and senior in scope.

Can you work freelance as a project manager?

Yes, project managers can work freelance by offering their services independently to clients or companies. Freelance project managers typically manage projects remotely, use tools like MS Project or Asana, and may need relevant certifications such as PMP. This work often involves flexible schedules and contract-based arrangements.

Job description

We're looking for a Senior Project Manager, with 5+ years of agency experience, to join us on a temporary basis, leading coordination across one of our key client portfolios. You'll turn complex, multi-workstream efforts into clear, achievable plans; aligning timelines, resources, and teams to deliver work on time and on budget. Attention to scope, schedules, and standards ensures creative and strategy partners can stay focused on great ideas while you keep everything moving smoothly, on time, and within budget.

This isn’t just scheduling and spreadsheets. It’s about giving designers, copywriters, strategists, and developers the support they need to do their best work without getting tangled in logistics. You’ll sit at the heart of the agency’s operational engine turning priorities into actionable plans, shielding creative energy from chaos, and spotting bumps in the road before they slow anyone down.

This is a temporary, 1099 independent contractor engagement running through Friday, December 18, 2026, reporting to the Head of Creative Operations. Team members are generally in the St. Louis office Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with Tuesday and Friday designated as remote, no-meeting days. This engagement is expected to require approximately 32–40 hours per week, though workload may vary from week to week. Exact weekly hours are flexible and open to discussion based on candidates availability.

What You'll Do:
  • Project Planning & Resourcing - Help define scopes of work with account leads; build and manage timelines, milestones, and resource allocations across multiple workstreams.
  • Workflow Coordination - Serve as the connective tissue between design, development, strategy, and account teams. Manage the broader set of work across the portfolio, ensuring consistency, balanced resources, and quality across campaigns.
  • Operational Efficiency - Partner with the Head of Creative Operations on best practices, tools, and process. Distill complex information into concise, actionable status updates and documentation.
  • Risk Management - Identify and assess risks early, and collaborate with account and creative leads on contingency planning. Track scope and budget, and partner with account leads to prevent scope creep.
What You Bring:
  • Required:
  • - 5+ years of project management experience in a creative, marketing, or production environment
  • - Proven success managing complex, multi-workstream projects, including budget management and schedule oversight
  • - Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • - Fluency with project management tools (Workamajig, Slack, or similar)
  • - A collaborative mindset and excellent cross-functional communication
  • - Ability to pivot gracefully under pressure and troubleshoot issues
  • - Curiosity for emerging creative technologies (AI-assisted tools or new production methods) and a desire to use them thoughtfully
  • - A steady, positive presence. Resilient, adaptable, and committed to making the work (and the people doing it) shine
Preferred:
  • - Agency experience
  • - Experience coordinating diverse production styles, including digital activations, live events, video, experiential, and social content

Benefits -This is a temporary, 1099 independent contractor engagement; standard Paradowski employee benefits do not apply.

Why join us

At Paradowski, craft and curiosity drive the work. You'll collaborate across disciplines with people who care as much about how the work gets made as the final result, with room to grow, contribute a point of view, and build a career alongside people who take the work seriously without taking themselves too seriously.
