Job description

Job Title: Intermediate Electrical Engineer

Job Description

Actalent's EPC client is hiring an Intermediate Electrical Engineer to take a hands-on, execution-focused position within a small engineering and procurement company serving the oil and gas industry. You will actively design and deliver electrical engineering solutions across multiple projects simultaneously, including pipelines, compressor stations, gas plants, and technical management of change (MOC) initiatives. The position involves working on projects in detailed engineering with total installed costs up to approximately $40M, as well as supporting front-end engineering design (FEED) work that is expected to transition into detailed engineering. This is a role for someone who enjoys being deeply involved in the technical work rather than focusing primarily on oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Execute detailed electrical engineering design for oil and gas projects, including pipelines, compressor stations, gas plants, and technical MOCs.
  • Work concurrently on 2–3 projects in detailed engineering with total installed costs up to approximately $40M.
  • Support upcoming FEED work for pipelines, tank MOCs, compressor stations, LACT units, and related facilities, and help transition these into detailed engineering.
  • Develop and review single line diagrams, I/O lists, and other key electrical design documentation.
  • Design and specify medium voltage systems, switchgear, MCCs, VFDs, PLC panels, transformers, and associated equipment.
  • Perform and interpret electrical studies such as short circuit analysis, protection coordination, arc flash, and load flow using tools such as ETAP.
  • Determine appropriate cable sizes and contribute to E-house design and layout, ensuring compliance with engineering standards and safety requirements.
  • Prepare, review, and support RFP packages for vendors and coordinate technical clarifications and responses.
  • Interface directly with clients to clarify requirements, present design concepts, and manage technical expectations.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple projects (5 or more at a time) in a small company environment, ensuring deliverables meet quality, schedule, and budget targets.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, consultants, designers, and drafters to ensure integrated and constructible designs.
  • Apply knowledge of relay controls and protection schemes at a conceptual and awareness level, escalating to specialists when necessary.
  • Contribute to both greenfield and brownfield design work, including modifications and upgrades to existing facilities.
  • Take a proactive, hands-on approach to problem-solving, staying engaged in detailed tasks and resolving issues quickly.
  • Communicate clearly and confidently with internal teams, clients, and vendors, providing timely updates and technical guidance.
  • Adapt quickly to changing priorities and switch between tasks as customer and project needs evolve.
  • Demonstrate high reliability, accountability, and ownership of assigned work, ensuring consistent follow-through on commitments.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline.
  • Completion of the P.Eng. exam and currently awaiting professional engineering stamp.
  • 5–10 years of experience as an Electrical Engineer, with demonstrable experience running and managing projects with limited oversight.
  • Experience in the oil and gas sector, including exposure to pipelines, compressor stations, gas plants, and related facilities.
  • Hands-on experience in a small company or small EPC environment, comfortable with a broad range of responsibilities.
  • Proficiency with medium voltage electrical systems, including specification and design of switchgear, MCCs, VFDs, and PLC panels.
  • Experience working with ETAP or similar electrical analysis software for short circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, and load flow studies.
  • Strong knowledge of cable sizing, E-house design, and SEI-related considerations.
  • Familiarity with single line diagrams, I/O lists, switchgear, MCCs, and transformers.
  • Awareness of relay controls and protection schemes sufficient to support design and coordination, even if not at expert level.
  • Experience preparing and supporting RFP packages for vendors, including technical documentation and clarifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects (5 or more) at the same time while maintaining quality and meeting deadlines.
  • Client-facing experience, including direct communication and coordination with external stakeholders.
  • Experience with both greenfield and brownfield design environments.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 2 or more years of experience stamping drawings and documents as a P.Eng. is an asset.
  • Experience in gas processing facilities and associated electrical systems is an advantage.
  • Exposure to LACT units, tank MOCs, and similar oil and gas facilities is beneficial.
  • Strong organizational skills to handle constant touchpoints across multiple projects.

Work Environment

This role is part of a small, collaborative electrical team that includes engineers, a consultant, designers, and drafters, fostering close-knit teamwork and frequent interaction.
