Job description
The Ingalls Library and Museum Archives serve the museum community by identifying, acquiring, organizing, and providing access to information in accordance with the values of the institution and to fulfill strategic plan initiatives. In fulfillment of this mission, the Head of Research and Scholarly Programming provides leadership and vision in the development, implementation, and evaluation of library services and resources that support intellectual access to the library collection and facilitate research and learning for all library constituencies including but not limited to CMA curators and staff; graduate students in the Joint Program in Art History and Museum Studies with Case Western Reserve University; CMA docents, volunteers, and interns; CMA donors, member, and the public. Provides information literacy instruction, orientations, tours, and reference support for museum collection development efforts. Initiates and implements programs and maintains collaborative relationships with museum staff, community, and professional organizations to facilitate library services.
Requirements
Master’s Degree in Library Science (M.L.I.S.) from an ALA-accredited program. Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in art history, M.A. preferred. A minimum of five to seven years of demonstrated reference experience and/or training in an academic or research library; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Supervisory experience required. Familiarity with integrated library systems and OCLC required. Working knowledge of at least two foreign languages. Familiarity with art historical and bibliographic terminology in other major European languages. Prior programming experience preferred. Comprehensive knowledge of art history and specialized print and electronic resources, including research methodology, provenance and the art marketplace, information literacy and programming developments, trends, and issues. Demonstrated experience with fiscal management, personnel management, and relevant technologies. Experience with data collection, analysis, and reporting. Demonstrated organizational, decision making and problem-solving skills including the ability to create policy; supervise staff, interns, and volunteers; prioritize and manage workflow, projects, and multiple tasks while meeting deadlines and solving problems in a dynamic environment. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with institutional departments, community partners, and potential donors. Committed to excellent customer service that is user-centered and to safeguarding patron and donor privacy. Committed to personal growth and fostering a team environment. Maintain the professional image of the employer. Excellent research and oral and written communication skills.
Physical demands include long periods of time sitting and long periods of time spent looking at a computer screen or fine print. Because the collection is dispersed in several areas connected by stairs and elevators, the incumbent will work on multiple floors, climbing on step stools to reach top shelves, and lifting moderately heavy library materials may be required. Reasonable accommodation may be provided to enable individuals to perform essential functions.
