Job description

Job Description:

As a Core Engineer Director, you will provide technical leadership to your teams for design and architectures for building solutions that allow for a seamless integration with current and future partners. You will manage those teams as they deliver on the IAS's mission of helping advertisers understand the quality of the ad data they're purchasing within the digital media ecosystem.

You will lead a team of talented engineers to design, build, and deploy cutting-edge technical solutions that will redefine our products and industry. You will be at the forefront of our AI strategy, driving technical innovation and ensuring our engineering efforts align with a significant business impact.

The ideal candidate is an AI-native leader with a proven track record of building and scaling AI systems from the ground up. You are a "builder first," maintaining a hands-on practice with the same AI-augmented workflows your team uses. You will foster a highly collaborative environment, partnering closely with Product and other stakeholders to transform complex business problems into robust, scalable solutions.

What you'll get to do:

  • Lead and mentor a team of 6-10 engineers, guiding them through the entire software development lifecycle-from research and prototyping to deployment and operations.

  • Operate as a player-coach, staying hands-on enough to review designs, break down hard problems, and set technical direction by example, not just through delegation.

  • Think and act strategically by owning the business and organizational strategy for your domain, not just the technical execution. Choose what not to build, as deliberately as what to build, identifying the problems that are most worth solving to drive business outcomes.

  • Collaborate across teams to ensure that our parallel, AI-augmented work streams create cohesive and powerful results rather than incoherence.

  • Partner with Product Managers and stakeholders to define product requirements, set precise goals, and translate them into actionable engineering roadmaps that deliver business value

  • Raise the bar for your team by coaching them on technical best practices and pushing for an order-of-magnitude impact. Act decisively when technical leverage isn't being fully utilized

  • Own and manage the tooling and infrastructure investments for your team, making disciplined decisions as tools move to consumption-based pricing.

  • Manage hiring, performance, and retention to build a high-performing team.

Who you are and what you have:

  • BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science Machine Learning, or a related STEM field.

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in software development, with at least 5 years leading and managing high-performing engineering teams.

  • Deep, hands-on experience building and deploying AI and machine learning systems at scale

  • A "builder first" mentality, with current, hands-on experience in modern AI-augmented development workflows

  • Proven ability to partner effectively with Product and business stakeholders to translate business needs into technical solutions

  • Expertise in system design and architecture for scalable, production-grade AI services

  • Experience working with other teams or technical program managers to coordinate cross-team projects

  • Excellent communication skills and a track record of delivering complex technical projects on time

  • Experience building and leading teams in a fast-paced, agile environment.

What puts you over the top:

  • Experience with MLOps, including CI/CD for machine learning, model monitoring, and data pipelines

  • A history of contributing to the AI community (e.g., open-source projects, publications, or conference presentations)

Title note: The external title for this role is intended to reflect the level of experience, scope, and leadership we are seeking in the market. Internal title may differ based on the candidate's background, expertise, and the final role structure.
