Director of Structural Engineering | GA

Location: Savannah, GA

Position Summary

The Director of Structural Engineering is responsible for leading the Engineering Department and ensuring the successful delivery of all engineering projects. This role provides strategic leadership through technical oversight, operational management, employee development, financial accountability, and business development. As a licensed Professional Engineer (PE), the Director serves as both a technical expert and department leader, driving project success while fostering a collaborative, high-performing team.

Key Abilities

  • CAD/Revit modeling.
  • Production of plan sheets, details, and exhibits.
  • Strong understanding of design concepts and competition of engineering calculations.
  • Understands analysis models and software capabilities.
  • Technical writing.
  • Strong Self-task management. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Prioritizing tasks.
    • Completing tasks within the indicated timeframe.
    • Updating the overseeing Senior Engineer or Engineering Director on progress.
  • Attend and participate in client meetings.
  • Teaches design concepts to less experienced team members.
  • Delegates project tasks to less experienced team members and checks their work.
  • Can complete project from start to finish. This includes the design of the project, production of construction drawings, coordination with other disciplines, etc.

Key Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the development and improvement of technical processes and standards.
    • In collaboration with Technical Director
  • Overall project management success on all design projects for team.
    • Includes QAQC and teaming management to ensure on time delivery and quality.
  • Staff development and progression. This includes:
    • Employee reviews.
    • Employee mentorship.
  • Timesheet review and approval.
  • Track and manage employee workload and review employee utilization.
    • In collaboration with Technical Director
  • Work with Technical Director for accurate reporting on projections.
  • Review monthly department billings and work with the Technical Director to ensure accuracy.
  • Work with the Technical Director to develop and review project proposals.
  • Manage design projects by leading a design team.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master's degree preferred).
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) required (Georgia).
  • 12+ years of progressive engineering experience.
  • 5+ years in an engineering leadership or management role.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of engineering design principles, codes, and industry standards.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering projects.
  • Proficiency with engineering design software (AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, or discipline-specific software).
  • Strong financial, project management, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making abilities.
  • Proven ability to mentor teams while balancing strategic and operational priorities.
