Job description

The Opportunity:
Tetra Tech invites you to consider a rewarding opportunity within our geotechnical engineering operations as a Senior to Principal-Level Geotechnical Engineer working from either our Billings, Helena, or Missoula, MT offices, multiple Colorado offices, or Phoenix, AZ office; we currently have a staff of 11 geotechnical engineers in Montana. Our Montana Geotechnical Group has strong longstanding working relationships with numerous government agencies, consulting engineering firms, and architects throughout Montana, Colorado, and the region. Our project assignments allow engineers to work and travel within the spectacular Rocky Mountain region and across the United States on diverse client projects and various industries, including infrastructure, environmental hazard sites, mining, and oil and gas.
Typical geotechnical projects touch the entire spectrum of geotechnical engineering, including; geologic hazard studies and mitigation, soil and rock slope stability analyses, waste containment design, horizontal directional drill (HDD) design, shallow and deep foundation design, bridge and highway corridor design, pavement section design, field instrumentation and monitoring, deep foundation load testing, and construction oversight and materials inspection.
Successful candidate should have strong technical skills plus ability to generate new work from regional or national markets. Experience in the development and successful implementation of capture plans for targeted clients or market segments is required. A strong track record of successfully project delivery and client satisfaction is required. Experience with projects in the civil, environmental, hydrology or hydraulics fields, mining and mine reclamation, geohazards, dams and levees, and general construction is a plus. Engage with and support other senior leaders on critical aspects of our business, fostering a spirit of collaboration and teamwork, and setting high expectations for technical and business performance across the company.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Provide leadership to sustain and facilitate growth of our geotechnical engineering practice and client accounts in Montana across the western United States.
  • Manage projects and staff through all states of the project life cycle in the delivery of geotechnical field investigation and design services.
  • Direct assistance in growth of the geotechnical group regionally and business development of key client accounts.
  • Perform geotechnical analysis and prepare final engineering reports.
  • Perform geotechnical quality control inspection and documentation on construction projects.
  • Professionally interact with clients.
  • Strictly adhere to and promote company health and safety standards and expectations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • BS in Civil Engineering with Geotechnical/Materials emphasis, or related Geological Engineering degree required.
  • Ten to twenty years or more of experience in geotechnical engineering.
  • PE license in MT, CO, or AZ or ability to obtain through reciprocity
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel and other Microsoft software.
  • Experienced in preparation of engineering plans and specifications packages for public and private projects.
  • Able to perform geotechnical design analysis, calculations, and proficient with current geotechnical design software.
  • Familiarity with geotechnical lab testing and construction materials testing expected.
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills, comfortable with client communications.
  • Strong business development track record.
  • A Pre-employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master of Science or PhD in Civil Engineering with Geotechnical/Materials emphasis, or related Geological Engineering degree preferred.
  • HAZWOPER and MSHA certification preferred.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment weighing up to 50lbs in variable weather and terrain.
  • Ability to travel and perform field oversight (<25% required).
  • Ability to walk across variable terrain, including uneven ground and steep slopes, in all weather conditions for up to 10-14 day work stints (extreme hot/cold temperatures, loud noises, heavy equipment, etc.).
  • Office work will consist of time sitting or standing at a desk and using a computer and other office equipment.

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:
  • This position is based out of either our Billings, Helena, or Missoula, MT office locations (preferred), with Lakewood, CO and Phoenix, AZ as secondary locations, and will have office and field responsibilities. This position may have a hybrid work arrangement to be worked out with your supervisor, but the candidate must reside within 50 miles of the local office. This arrangement is subject to review and may change at the company's discretion.
  • Field work will include work to be performed outside, as a result will include working in various environmental factors (weather, altitude, terrain, noise, etc.). This can include remaining stationary for long periods of time, walking, bending, lifting, and sitting for site assessments, sampling, oversight, and other field activities.
  • Office work will include extended periods sitting or standing at a desk and using a computer and other office equipment.

Additional Information:
  • Full-time, Monday through Friday work schedule (40 hours). Occasionally extended hours may be required based on project and/or client needs.
  • Work will be performed in an office and field setting.

Target salary range: $125,000 to $150,000. Please note that Tetra Tech considers various factors in determining pay, including but not limited to: education, relevant and demonstrated work experience in the role, skills, geographic location, qualifications, certifications, and other competencies relevant to the needs of the business.
