What is a programme manager?

A Programme Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within an organization, ensuring they align with business objectives and deliver value. They coordinate project managers, manage resources, and communicate with stakeholders to ensure successful program delivery. Unlike project managers who focus on individual projects, programme managers maintain a big-picture view, managing interdependencies and risks across projects. Their work is essential in achieving strategic goals and driving organizational change.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a programme manager?

To thrive as a Programme Manager, you need expertise in project management, strategic planning, and stakeholder coordination, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications like PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management tools such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana and experience with budgeting and resource allocation systems are typically required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help Programme Managers navigate complex projects and motivate cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure programmes are delivered on time, within scope and budget, and aligned with organizational goals.

How does a programme manager typically balance multiple projects and ensure effective communication among project teams?

A Programme Manager often oversees several related projects simultaneously, which requires strong organizational and communication skills. They manage interdependencies and allocate resources while regularly coordinating with project managers, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to align goals and timelines. Effective Programme Managers establish regular check-ins, use collaborative tools, and create transparent reporting structures to keep everyone informed and address issues proactively. This approach helps prevent bottlenecks and ensures that programme objectives are met efficiently.

What is the difference between Programme Manager vs Project Manager?

AspectProgramme ManagerProject Manager
Primary FocusOversees multiple related projects to achieve strategic objectivesManages individual projects to deliver specific outputs
ScopeBroader, long-term initiativesSpecific, short-term deliverables
ResponsibilitiesAligns projects with organizational goals, manages interdependenciesPlans, executes, and closes projects within scope, time, and budget
CredentialsOften PMP or PgMP, relevant experience in program managementPMP or similar project management certifications

While both roles require strong project management skills and certifications like PMP, a Programme Manager focuses on coordinating multiple related projects to achieve strategic business objectives, whereas a Project Manager concentrates on delivering specific project outputs within defined constraints.

How much does a Programme Manager make?

The average salary for a Programme Manager varies depending on experience, industry, and location, but typically ranges from $80,000 to $150,000 annually. Senior Programme Managers with certifications like MSP or PMP and strong leadership skills tend to earn higher salaries. Compensation may also include bonuses and benefits based on project scope and organizational size.

What does a programme manager actually do?

A programme manager oversees multiple related projects to ensure they align with organizational goals and deliver value. They coordinate teams, manage budgets, monitor progress, and communicate with stakeholders to ensure successful completion of the overall program. Strong leadership, planning skills, and familiarity with project management tools like MS Project or Jira are essential.

At L2 Aviation, we do far more than engineer, manufacture, and integrate aviation systemsโ€”we deliver confidence, reliability, and innovative solutions that keep our customers connected around the world. As a global leader in avionics integration and aerospace solutions, we partner with airlines, OEMs, MROs, suppliers, and operators to provide exceptional service throughout every stage of the customer journey.

As we continue to expand, weโ€™re looking for a Customer Success Manager who is passionate about building relationships, solving complex challenges, and creating an outstanding customer experience. If youโ€™re someone who thrives on connecting customers with the right solutions and enjoys working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment, weโ€™d love to have you on our team.

WHY WORK WITH US:

  • L2 Aviation is a leading provider of worldwide aviation services that include aircraft engineering, aircraft modifications, aircraft parts sales and brokerage, aircraft wiring harness manufacturing, avionics product manufacturing and avionics design and integration represented by a world class team utilizing the latest in state-of-the-art technologies with the support of a highly skilled and experienced workforce.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE WORKING HERE:

  • At L2 Aviation, youโ€™ll have the opportunity to lead complex aerospace programs from initial customer requirements through development, production launch, and ongoing support. Youโ€™ll work closely with customers, engineering, production, supply chain, quality, sales, and leadership to bring innovative aviation solutions to life while making a direct impact on customer satisfaction, operational performance, and business growth. Hereโ€™s what makes our environment unique:
  • Lead Programs That Matter: Take ownership of customer programs throughout their full life cycle, from initial requirements and development through prototype, production launch, and ongoing program support.
  • Make a Direct Impact: Your leadership directly influences on-time delivery, quality, profitability, customer satisfaction, and the successful execution of aerospace programs.
  • Collaborative Culture: Partner with Engineering, Production, Material Control, Procurement, Planning, Quality, Sales, Customers, and Executive Leadership to solve complex challenges and achieve shared objectives.
  • Drive Accountability: Influence outcomes and coordinate cross-functional teams to keep programs aligned, even without direct supervisory authority.
  • Professional Growth: Expand your program management, business, financial, and leadership capabilities within a growing global aerospace organization.
  • Innovation in Aviation: Help deliver innovative aircraft integration, electrical, and wire harness solutions that support the evolving needs of the aviation industry.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • The Program Manager serves as the primary point of contact for assigned wire harness programs and is responsible for managing programs throughout their complete life cycleโ€”from initial customer requirements and program launch through engineering development, prototype builds, production launch, and ongoing program support. This role brings together customer needs, technical requirements, operational execution, financial performance, quality, and delivery to ensure programs are completed on time, within budget, at or above targeted margins, and in alignment with customer expectations. You will:
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned programs, managing customer relationships, and program activities throughout the complete program life cycle.
  • Partner with Sales, Engineering, and customers to understand and manage program scope, requirements, deliverables, timing, commercial commitments, and constraints.
  • Develop, maintain, and communicate comprehensive program plans, schedules, budgets, milestones, resources, material requirements, risks, and dependencies.
  • Coordinate activities across Engineering, Production, Material Control, Procurement, Planning, Quality, Sales, and other supporting departments to ensure program objectives and customer commitments remain aligned.
  • Monitor program performance, including schedule, cost, margin, quality, material availability, risks, open issues, and scope changes.
  • Proactively identify program concerns and coordinate mitigation, contingency, and recovery actions to maintain successful execution.
  • Monitor program financial performance, identify budget variances and margin risks, and coordinate opportunities to improve program profitability while maintaining quality and customer commitments.
  • Facilitate program meetings, customer reviews, design reviews, production readiness activities, and launch milestones.
  • Ensure program decisions, action items, responsibilities, and followโ€‘up activities are clearly communicated and effectively executed.
  • Manage customer requirements, expectations, and program changes while ensuring impacts to scope, cost, schedule, quality, resources, materials, capacity, and margin are evaluated, communicated, documented, and appropriately approved.
  • Provide timely program status, performance metrics, risks, issues, and financial updates to customers, the Director of Development and Innovation, and other leadership.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation, records, schedules, and supporting information throughout the program life cycle.
  • Coordinate program closeout activities, including completion of deliverables, documentation and data archiving, lessons learned, and opportunities to improve future program execution.
  • Identify opportunities to improve program cost, quality, delivery, profitability, and customer satisfaction.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen program execution, operational efficiency, and the customer experience.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by department management.

WHAT YOU BRING:

  • Youโ€™ll thrive in this role if you bring:

    • Strong knowledge of program management principles, including scope, scheduling, budgeting, risk and change management, resource coordination, and performance measurement.
    • Strong financial and business acumen, with the ability to monitor program costs, budget performance, margin objectives, and opportunities to improve profitability.
    • Proven ability to coordinate activities, influence outcomes, and drive accountability across multiple departments without direct supervisory authority.
    • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with Engineering, Production, Material Control, Procurement, Planning, Quality, Sales, customers, and other internal and external stakeholders.

    • Excellent planning, organization, prioritization, communication, negotiation, facilitation, and presentation skills.
    • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with customers, senior leadership, and cross-functional teams.
    • Ability to work independently and effectively manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-sensitive environment while maintaining a strong commitment to quality, on-time delivery, cost control, profitability, and customer satisfaction.
    • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and program/project management software; experience with ERP/MRP systems strongly preferred.
