What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Project/Program Specialist 2 or Project/Program Specialist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) plays a crucial role in maintaining the nation's nuclear deterrent and advancing scientific research. At the heart of LANL's mission is the Pit Technologies (PT) Division, a key component of the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP). This division is at the forefront of manufacturing operations at Technical Area 55 (TA-55), a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to plutonium processing, pit production, and business operations.
The PT Division is currently in growth mode in terms of scope, budget, and personnel, and is currently looking to add support for the engineering teams. In order to produce pits for the NNSA, PT processes must be qualified by the Design Agency (DA) per the requirements of Defense Programs Business Process Systems (DPBPS). The selected applicant will use project management, coordination, and administrative skills to ensure that qualification activities meet programmatic requirements of reestablishing rate production of plutonium pits at TA-55. The selected individual will work with stakeholders across LANL, partner laboratories, other national security enterprise labs, plants and sites to implement a structured process to maintain business operations.
Project/Program Specialist 2
- Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Assures safety and security compliance, maintains required safety and security training, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
- Apply knowledge and experience in establishing operational plans for job area, developing and implementing new products or services to meet customer requirements with a given mission area, ensuring process parameters are maintained, supporting cost estimating, cost analysis.
- Under limited direction, monitor performance by analyzing, or reporting on the assigned aspects of the project scope.
- Under limited direction, serve as the primary spokesperson to report status and issues to the PT leadership including group leaders, the program office and the division office.
- Identify potential risks, develop risk mitigation strategies and corrective actions, and recommend risk acceptance/avoidance and report those risks to leadership.
- Understand and adhere to all Laboratory and regulatory guidance and governance specific to the project or program work.

Project/Program Specialist 3
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level
- Without considerable direction, serve as the one of the primary spokespersons to report status and issues to the PT leadership including group leaders, the program office and the division office.
- Without considerable direction, monitor performance by analyzing, or reporting on the assigned aspects of the project scope.
- Negotiate with project, program or line managers to ensure that resources are available and qualified to accomplish the work, and to marshal resources to complete project deliverables within the scope, and schedules defined in project work packages.
- Provide specialized assistance to the PT management team in planning, organizing and controlling resources/processes related to business operations.
- Applies advanced knowledge and experience in establishing operational plans for job area, developing and implementing new products or services to meet customer requirements with a given mission area, ensuring process parameters are maintained, assistance in developing work packages to meet specific programmatic needs, supporting cost estimating, cost analysis, and cost control activities as well as supporting schedule development, maintenance, reporting, and monitoring activities, as directed for moderately large complex project or programs.

Education/Experience at the lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at the higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience implementing regulatory requirements (e.g., DOE Order 426.2A, NAP 401.1A).
- Familiarity with Conduct of Operations, Nuclear Facility Training, Engineering, and Maintenance as they apply to manufacturing facility environments.
- Experience with NNSA Directive NAP401.1A , ALDWP's Weapons Quality Assurance Program, or similar rigorous quality management systems, e.g. 10CFR50, ASME or NQA-1.
- Experience managing operations in a customer service environment.
- An active DOE Q-level clearance
Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Pit Technologies is staffing for production work 7 days per week. This position may require 7-day coverage and therefore may require working a shift schedule that includes weekends. Individuals typically work 4 days per week, 10 hours per day.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.
