What Is the Job of a Program Manager?

The job of a program manager is to plan, organize, and coordinate management programs or external programs for a business or institution. As a program manager, your duties vary depending on the type of organization for which you work, but many of the responsibilities for this role are similar or overlap. You typically supervise numerous associates and analysts who help prepare data and assessments about current programming and how it can be improved. You help to implement new programs for employees or customers and promote them through HR or outreach coordinators and marketing professionals. You also assess individual projects and how they interact with one another.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Program Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, strategic planning abilities, and a relevant degree, often supported by certifications like PMP or Agile. Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana is essential for tracking progress and managing resources. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you motivate teams and navigate complex stakeholder environments. These competencies ensure that programs are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges Program Managers face when coordinating cross-functional teams?

Program Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning priorities across diverse teams, managing conflicting stakeholder expectations, and ensuring clear communication among departments with different workflows. Navigating these challenges requires strong negotiation and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to build consensus and foster collaboration. Successful Program Managers proactively establish regular check-ins, promote transparency, and adapt strategies to keep projects on track and maintain team engagement.

What are program managers?

Program managers are professionals responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within an organization, ensuring they align with strategic goals and deliver expected outcomes. They coordinate the efforts of project managers, manage resources, set priorities, and address risks and issues that arise across the program. Unlike project managers who focus on individual projects, program managers take a broader view, ensuring that all projects within a program work together effectively to achieve long-term business objectives.

Job description

10Beauty is a robotics startup based in Burlington, MA. We have raised $70M from some of the leading venture and celebrity investors in the country to build the world's first fully autonomous manicure machine. We have pre-sold our first 1,000 machines to some of the most iconic brands in America, including Ulta Beauty and Nordstrom.
As of November 2025, we have launched our first robot at Ulta Beauty in Everett. We are a fast growing 50+ person organization with deep robotics experience. Come join the company who will put 'beauty robotics' on the map!
Introduction:
10Beauty is growing our Program Management team! We are seeking someone great to lead the planning, coordination, and execution of complex product development initiatives. You'll work across technical, design, and operations teams to keep projects on track, align priorities, and ensure successful delivery of both hardware and software.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who thrives in a small, fast-moving company, enjoys wearing multiple hats, and can balance program management structure with operational execution.
What you'll do:
  • Build and maintain detailed project schedules, tracking milestones, and interdependencies across multiple teams
  • Drive cross-functional alignment by leading regular project check-ins, surfacing risks, and facilitating tradeoff decisions
  • Provide clear reporting and updates to leadership, individual contributors, and other stakeholders to ensure visibility on project status
  • Partner with engineering, design, and operational teams to scope projects and define timelines for MVP and beyond
  • Drive logistics planning for key deployments, including coordination of machine installations, supporting personnel, and consumables or other supplies
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain to manage equipment readiness, delivery, and setup
  • Coordinate testing efforts (e.g., consumables, colors), ensuring inventory and timelines are aligned with project schedules

What you have:
  • Strong knowledge of program management principles, tools, and best practices
  • Proven ability to manage complex schedules with multiple interdependencies
  • Experience with building and launching a physical product
  • Familiarity with change management as we pivot internally and externally from launching an MVP product to scaling for production volumes
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to align stakeholders and influence others without authority
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving environment and willingness to occasionally roll up your sleeves on operational tasks

At 10Beauty, we consider a wide-range of factors when determining compensation, based on individual qualifications, skills, and experience. Equity and benefits are included for all full-time employees. If you believe you can contribute to our team, we invite you to apply. We appreciate diversity and welcome those who can bring fresh perspectives and skills to our team.
Salary Range
$115,000-$130,000 USD
We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
Thank you for considering 10Beauty!
