What are program managers?

Program managers are professionals responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within an organization, ensuring they align with strategic goals and deliver expected outcomes. They coordinate the efforts of project managers, manage resources, set priorities, and address risks and issues that arise across the program. Unlike project managers who focus on individual projects, program managers take a broader view, ensuring that all projects within a program work together effectively to achieve long-term business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Program Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, strategic planning abilities, and a relevant degree, often supported by certifications like PMP or Agile. Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana is essential for tracking progress and managing resources. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you motivate teams and navigate complex stakeholder environments. These competencies ensure that programs are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges Program Managers face when coordinating cross-functional teams?

Program Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning priorities across diverse teams, managing conflicting stakeholder expectations, and ensuring clear communication among departments with different workflows. Navigating these challenges requires strong negotiation and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to build consensus and foster collaboration. Successful Program Managers proactively establish regular check-ins, promote transparency, and adapt strategies to keep projects on track and maintain team engagement.

What Is the Job of a Program Manager?

The job of a program manager is to plan, organize, and coordinate management programs or external programs for a business or institution. As a program manager, your duties vary depending on the type of organization for which you work, but many of the responsibilities for this role are similar or overlap. You typically supervise numerous associates and analysts who help prepare data and assessments about current programming and how it can be improved. You help to implement new programs for employees or customers and promote them through HR or outreach coordinators and marketing professionals. You also assess individual projects and how they interact with one another.

Job description

Senior Program Manager
Job Location (Short): Houston, United States | Madison, United States
Workplace Type: Remote
Req Id: 3005
Responsibilities
We're hiring a Senior Program Manager to drive marketing for Octave Attune - Octave's EAM and APM solutions for asset-intensive industries. The people you're marketing to are running plants, fleets and facilities where uptime, reliability and safety aren't talking points. They're the business. Your job is to make sure those operators, maintenance leaders and reliability engineers see Octave as the partner that gets it.
You'll sit on the Global Portfolio Marketing team and own the conception, planning and execution of marketing programs for Octave Attune. You'll partner with product management, solution design, demand generation, regional marketing and sales to set priorities, build go-to-market plans and run programs from kickoff to results.
What you'll do:
  • Build the marketing strategy for Octave Attune, translating product capabilities and customer pain points into messaging, positioning and value propositions that hold up in front of plant managers, reliability engineers, maintenance leaders and the executives who fund their work.
  • Plan and execute integrated campaigns across email, social, video, webinars and live and virtual events - covering net-new pipeline, customer expansion and product launches.
  • Develop go-to-market packages for new releases and major campaigns: launch narratives, sales talk tracks, customer-facing collateral, web copy, blog posts, case studies and analyst briefings.
  • Partner with the enablement team to equip sales, pre-sales and ADRs with the materials and product context they need to have substantive conversations with asset-intensive buyers.
  • Tap internal SMEs, external consultants and customer references to ground every asset in real industry context.
  • Track program performance against pipeline, engagement and revenue metrics, then bring sharp recommendations on what to double down on and what to stop.
  • Coordinate across key stakeholders to keep messaging consistent and execution aligned across regions and channels.

Education / Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in marketing or a related field.
  • 5+ years in B2B marketing, product marketing or product management, ideally for software or technology.
  • A track record of running multi-channel marketing programs from strategy through execution, on a deadline, with multiple stakeholders pulling in different directions.
  • Sharp written and verbal communication. You can hold a room, write a launch narrative and give a colleague's deck the edit it needs.
  • Comfort working with global teams across regions and time zones, inside a large organization.
  • The ability to read marketing and business data, find the insight and act on it.
  • Hands-on experience with Salesforce and a marketing automation platform.

Bonus points
  • Direct experience marketing to asset-intensive industries: oil and gas, power and utilities, manufacturing, mining, chemicals or transportation.
  • Working knowledge of enterprise asset management, asset performance management, reliability or maintenance software categories.
