WHAT YOU WILL DO FOR OUR TEAM
The Maintenance Intern will gain hands-on experience in providing maintenance services to low-income communities. The Intern will work with Homes for Good's Maintenance team to complete work requests and maintain the grounds and buildings at low-income apartment communities.
The internship will run for 3-6 months over the Spring and Summer months. Start and end dates are flexible based on the intern's schedule and academic and/or professional obligations. The Intern will be scheduled approximately 10-15 hours per week (depending on intern availability).
DUTIES
These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.
  • Provide a variety of day-to-day tasks as required to assist the Property Manager in the management of apartment communities.
  • Assist Maintenance staff in responding to resident work requests and routine preventative maintenance tasks;
  • Perform minor routine repairs for vacant and unoccupied units.
  • Performs general laborer and custodial duties to include; the cleaning of buildings and grounds; removal of weeds, leaves, cleaning of gutters and drains; washing windows, digging trenches.
  • Assist landscaping team including; mowing, edging, pruning, weeding, raking of leaves and removal of debris, weed and insect control.
  • Distribution and posting of notices, newsletters, and other communications.

EXPERIENCE & TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job is sufficient. Typical combinations of training and experience would be:
IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate will likely have knowledge and experience in the following areas:
  • Interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Growth mindset and willingness to learn.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records.
  • Perform mathematical calculations accurately.
  • Perform a wide variety of physical tasks requiring frequent and repetitive lifting, bending, squatting, climbing, crawling and reaching above shoulder level.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of custodial and grounds maintenance equipment including hand and power tools.
  • Communicate and interact with people of multiple cultures, backgrounds and styles by incorporating and adapting to the world view and perspective of others.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

TRAINING:
The Maintenance Internship is designed for recent high school graduates or students enrolled in a trade or certificate program. No prior professional experience is required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this position the employee is frequently required to stand, bend, reach and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility including the ability to move materials weighing up to 100 pounds of force infrequently, up to 75 pounds occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 20 pounds continually.

Gain hands-on experience in the field of housing maintenance. Interns will have the opportunity to work with staff to develop and implement skills related to minor maintenance and landscaping functions. This will give Interns a firsthand look at the challenges and rewards of working in the maintenance field.
Opportunities to shadow skilled maintenance functions. The Intern will have the opportunity to shadow skilled maintenance functions such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical and painting. This will help the Intern to develop an understanding of the various skill areas within the maintenance field.
Make a difference in the community. The Intern will have the opportunity to make a difference in the community by working to improve the lives of Homes for Good's residents.
