Roof Above is NC’s most comprehensive homeless service provider.  Our mission is to unite our community to end homelessness, one life at a time.  Focusing on individuals experiencing homelessness, Roof Above offers everything from street outreach to shelter to Rapid Rehousing to Permanent Supportive Housing. Roof Above’s services and programs reach over 1,300 individuals every day across nine campuses in Charlotte.  Roof Above was born through the merger of Urban Ministry Center and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte in 2019. 

POSITION SUMMARY

 The Tenant Engagement Specialist is responsible for delivering an inclusive model of volunteer engagement that supports those served by Roof Above living in our housing programs.  The Tenant Engagement Specialist plays a leadership role and works collaboratively with programming and property management staff in helping to create and build community within our programs. The Tenant Engagement Specialist also plays a crucial role in the support structure of housing units and will work to build a rapport with tenants to ensure they are aware of opportunity to engage in both their housing community and the wider community. The Tenant Engagement Specialist   will be responsible for engaging volunteers to coordinate and operationalize special programs, activities, events, and donation needs. The Tenant Engagement Specialist will build key relationships with various stakeholders including tenants, volunteers, staff, and donors and ensure that strong communication using a variety of tools is well-managed. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Works in deep collaboration with program and property staff to create community amongst tenants within their housing community by hosting regular community meetings, social engagements, focus groups for feedback and activities
  • Actively listen to tenants and organize events that meet tenant’s interests and comfort level
  • Create a robust calendar of activities happening on nearly a daily basis and share broadly through a variety of communication tools with tenants, staff and others.
  • Organize outings for tenants to volunteer or engage in activities off-site to build connection with the wider community
  • Create and operationalize a wide variety of meaningful volunteer activities that meet volunteers where they are in their interest level, their understanding of Roof Above’s work, and time commitment
  • Utilize the CRM, Virtuous, track and manage all volunteer engagement
  • Work with volunteers to arrange and organize all logistics for events and activities
  • Engage with and be accessible to tenants on an individual basis to build relationship and create rapport  
  • Organize and host engagements in partnership with the team to acknowledge and recognize holidays and special days both big and small including but not limited to birthday cards/notes, welcome gestures, fun holiday moments, special awareness months
  • Manage seasonal, holiday decoration and create inviting spaces when entering building and gathering spaces and use these opportunities for tenant and volunteer engagement
  • Work with the Program team to assist in creative interventions that promote housing stability
  • Maintain/organize donations such as holiday gifts, welcome home kits, and fresh start kits
  • Participate in weekly Program meeting to learn and share updates
  • Create effective communication strategy to engage tenants with events, including posting flyers and individualized invitations to encourage tenant engagement and provide relevant information to tenant
  • Serve as a liaison with the communication team for a wide variety of items including but not limited to materials needed for tenants (ie- newsletter, invite to activities, etc), photos, story gathering, etc.
  • Serve at the liaison to facilities for all needs related to volunteer engagement taking place on campus

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Assume other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferred, with 1-2 years of experience in fundraising, communication, volunteer programming, program experience or related field. High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Desire and interest to work with people who have experienced chronic homelessness.
  • Desire and interest to work with volunteers who have an interest in serving people have experienced chronic homelessness
  • Commitment to collaboration and team building
  • Experience in planning events and activities
  • Detail oriented and organized with the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment
  • Superior interpersonal skills
  • Creative and proactive in developing and operationalizing new ideas

  • A high level of flexibility for working during the evenings and on weekends

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

This position is located at one of Roof Above’s housing programs.

Position requires evening and weekend work as needed.

Position requires being on-site most days.
