Job description

Relocation Assistance Available for Qualified Candidates!Position: Medical Director & Chief, Division of Geriatric Medicine

The Medical Director and Chief of the Division of Geriatric Medicine will act as a key strategic and operational leader, collaborating with practice administrators to uphold high standards in clinical care, patient safety, provider satisfaction, and efficient resource management. This role integrates clinical and administrative efforts with the overarching mission, vision, and strategic objectives of our organization, while promoting a culture of professionalism, innovation, and ongoing improvement across both inpatient and outpatient environments in the Southern Region.

This position offers flexibility based on the interests of the applicant, including opportunities in primary care within nursing homes and assisted living facilities, inpatient/outpatient geriatrics assessments or consultations, innovations in clinical care models, and educational roles.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Clinical Operations & Oversight:
    • Lead clinical operations across various practices and outreach locations in partnership with division leadership, including the Program Director for the Geriatrics Fellowship, Managing APP, and section leads for Inpatient Geriatrics, Research/Quality, Nursing Home, and Ambulatory Senior Care Consults.
    • Collaborate on budget planning, patient visit workflows, call schedules, and EPIC integration.
    • Ensure adherence to clinical protocols and documentation standards, including professional practice evaluations for all providers.
  • Provider Supervision:
    • Directly oversee physicians and advanced practice professionals.
    • Encourage career development for providers.
    • Manage recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, peer reviews, and annual evaluations.
    • Foster professionalism, enhance patient experience, and boost productivity.
  • Quality & Safety:
    • Lead quality improvement initiatives and safety programs.
    • Address patient complaints in collaboration with Risk Management.
  • Strategic Planning & Outreach:
    • Collaborate with the medical group to expand services and develop recruitment strategies.
    • Advocate for clinician needs and organizational commitments.
  • Education & Leadership Development:
    • Support educational initiatives for care teams, learners, and new providers.
    • Develop Associate Medical Directors into effective leaders.
Academic Leadership Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate Geriatric Medicine grand rounds and contribute to the Department of Medicine grand rounds.
  • Collaborate with leaders in graduate and undergraduate medical education.
  • Promote the division's contributions to clinical care, education, and research.
  • Assist division members in pursuing academic appointments with affiliated medical schools.
  • Co-lead the Geriatrics Specialty Council.
  • Mentor and support research initiatives in partnership with research leadership.
Clinical Leadership Responsibilities:
  • Provide specialized expertise to enhance care models.
  • Assist in formulating clinical policies and performance improvement strategies.
  • Align objectives with the Balanced Scorecard and service line goals.
Administrative Management:
  • Engage in ongoing professional practice evaluations and focused evaluations.
  • Support faculty development and involvement in professional societies.
  • Participate in relevant meetings and workgroups.
  • Oversee clinical programs, including inpatient, outpatient, and long-term care services.
  • Provide input on capital budgeting and strategic planning.

Reporting Structure:

This position reports to the Chair of Medicine & Senior Medical Director for Primary Care in the Southern Region.

Collaborative Relationships:

Works closely with the Chair of Family Medicine, Chief Medical Officer, Administrative Director for Geriatrics, and other leadership roles within the organization.
