Job description

Driven to be the Best

People. Performance. Purpose.

At Avis Budget Group, we're driven to be the best vehicle rental company in the world, together. Our 25,000 employees raise the bar every day, bringing different perspectives, taking ownership, and leading with integrity. We're defining the future of mobility with safe, sustainable solutions that move people, businesses, and communities forward.

The UX Design Manager will be responsible for leading user experience, interface design, and user research across Avis Budget Group's digital product ecosystem. This is a highly visible leadership role that manages a team of UX Design and UX Research professionals and partners closely with Product Management, Engineering, Marketing, and external agency partners to deliver intuitive, accessible, and commercially effective customer experiences.

The ideal candidate is both a strong design leader and an effective people manager: someone who can set UX direction, coach and develop designers, oversee user research, manage design priorities, and ensure high-quality execution across multiple product workstreams.

This role will support critical customer journeys including booking, reservation management, upsells, loyalty experiences, and post-booking trip management across Avis and Budget.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead UX and UI design across web and mobile app platforms, from discovery and concept through execution and optimization.
  • Manage, mentor, and further build-out a team of UX professionals, providing clear direction, feedback, coaching, and prioritization support.
  • Oversee user research activities, ensuring customer insights are incorporated into product strategy, design decisions, and experience improvements.
  • Partner closely with Product Management to define user-centered solutions that support engagement, conversion, retention, and operational efficiency.
  • Translate complex rental, loyalty, and ancillary product requirements into simple, intuitive, and accessible customer experiences.
  • Guide the creation of user flows, wireframes, prototypes, high-fidelity designs, research plans, usability studies, and interaction specifications.
  • Collaborate with Engineering to ensure designs are feasible, clearly specified, and implemented accurately across mobile apps and web.
  • Manage relationships with external design agencies and contractors to scale design and research capacity while maintaining quality and consistency.
  • Establish, maintain, and advocate for design systems, reusable patterns, UX standards, research practices, and documentation standards.
  • Use qualitative insights, analytics, usability feedback, and business performance data to inform design decisions and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Partner with Marketing teams to ensure digital experiences reflect the distinct positioning and tone of Avis and Budget.
  • Champion accessibility, usability, mobile-first design, and customer clarity across all digital experiences.
  • Help define and improve the design intake, review, prioritization, research planning, and handoff process across Product, Design, Engineering, and QA.

Perks You'll Get:

  • Access to Medical, Dental, Vision, Life and Disability insurance
  • Eligible to elect other voluntary benefits including: Group Auto Insurance, Group Home Insurance, Pet Insurance, Legal Assistance, Identity Theft Protection, FSA, Accident Insurance, Critical Illness Insurance, and additional life insurance coverages
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan with company matched contributions
  • Full training to learn the business and enhance professional skills
  • Employee discounts, including discounted prices on the purchase of Avis/Budget cars
  • Access to an Employee Assistance Program for services including counseling, financial and legal consultation, referrals for care service and more

What We're Looking For:

  • 7+ years of UX/UI design experience across digital products, with meaningful experience designing for mobile apps and responsive web.
  • 2+ years of experience managing, mentoring, or formally leading UX designers, researchers, or multidisciplinary UX teams.
  • Experience overseeing or directly conducting user research, usability testing, customer interviews, concept validation, or related discovery activities.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating user-centered design solutions for complex product flows, preferably in eCommerce, travel, mobility, financial services, retail, or another transaction-heavy environment.
  • Proficiency with Figma and modern design collaboration tools.
  • Ability to balance customer needs, business goals, technical constraints, and delivery timelines.
  • Strong communication, storytelling, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced product environment with multiple priorities, brands, platforms, and regional considerations.
  • Experience using customer research, analytics, A/B testing, usability testing, or customer feedback to improve digital experiences.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to simplify complex interactions and reduce customer friction.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing a team of designers and/or researchers in a product-led organization.
  • Experience designing for iOS and Android native mobile applications.
  • Experience designing checkout, upsell, or post-purchase management flows.
  • Experience building or scaling a design system across multiple brands or platforms.

The annual starting salary for this position is between $140,000 - $180,000 annually. Factors that may affect starting pay within this range include geography/market, skills, education, experience, and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
