The Windsor Essex County Humane Society is dedicated to creating a compassionate and safe environment for all animals in our community. We believe in the power of human-animal connection and rely on the dedication of our incredible volunteers to achieve our mission. The Volunteer Programs Coordinator strengthens the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society by fostering meaningful volunteer involvement, coordinating event volunteers, supporting foster placements, and assisting with shelter and community activities. Through strong communication, organization, leadership in delivering high‑quality enrichment programs, and relationship building, this role helps create a compassionate, efficient, and supportive environment for volunteers, staff, and animals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the full volunteer lifecycle, from recruiting and onboarding to training, engagement, and heartfelt recognition, ensuring a rewarding experience for all.
  • Drive the coordination of impactful volunteer involvement for shelter programs, youth activities, and critical community events and fundraisers.
  • Support our foster program by facilitating placements for dogs, reducing shelter stress, and managing inventory effectively.
  • Champion exceptional customer service and foster a positive, collaborative, and rewarding volunteer culture across the organization.
  • Support interdepartmental needs by assisting with (but not limited to) animal assessments, introductions, and animal photography coordination.
  • Maintain accurate volunteer records and data using specialized software to ensure efficient program management and reporting.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • A diploma or degree in Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, Education, Social Sciences, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in volunteer coordination, nonprofit administration, or similar roles, with a proven track record of engaging diverse volunteer groups.
  • Demonstrated experience in animal behaviour or animal welfare organizations is a significant asset.
  • Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills to inspire and guide volunteers effectively.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities, capable of coordinating multiple programs and priorities simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with volunteer management software, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office.
  • A deep enthusiasm for animal welfare and a commitment to maintaining a compassionate, supportive environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, adapting to evolving needs within a dynamic setting.
  • Physical ability to perform assigned duties, with no allergies or fears that would interfere with animal handling.
  • First Aid & CPR certification, or a willingness to obtain it shortly after hiring.
