Project Description:
This opportunity supports a national public health program within the Department of Veterans Affairs, focused on disease surveillance and rapid response to emerging health events across the VA system. The work involves epidemiologic investigations, large-scale patient lookback and notification efforts, and specialized public health laboratory testing in support of clinical care and outbreak response. Personnel collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians, epidemiologists, laboratory scientists, data analysts, and communications staff to investigate potential exposure events and deliver timely, accurate findings. This is an onsite role based in Northern California, with occasional travel to affiliated medical facilities in the surrounding region. Ideal candidates bring prior experience in a federal health, public health, or clinical research setting and are comfortable handling sensitive patient information in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
Job Summary:
Supports the management and evaluation of investigation procedures and provides assistance to public health epidemiologists and attorneys, with heavy emphasis on medical chart review and staff interviews.

  • Support investigations across areas such as chronic diseases, environmental health, infectious diseases, and injury prevention and control.
  • Maintain thorough, accurate documentation while handling sensitive information appropriately.
Required Experience:

  • Experience conducting staff interviews as part of investigations, reviews, or audits.
  • Familiarity with one or more investigation areas: chronic diseases, environmental health, infectious diseases, injury prevention and control.
Preferred Experience:
  • Prior support of a VA/VHA lookback, epidemiologic investigation, or patient-safety review - ideally with PHSR or at VAPAHCS.
  • Hands-on experience with VA electronic health records (VistA/CPRS) for chart review.
  • Experience supporting investigations with legal/regulatory dimensions and handling sensitive patient data under HIPAA.
  • Strong documentation, procedure-evaluation, and coordination skills.
Education & Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in public health, health sciences, health information management, or a related field preferred (equivalent experience may substitute).
  • Health-information or medical-records credential (e.g., RHIT/RHIA) a plus.
Work Authorization, Clearance Requirement, & Additional Information:
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government Public Trust clearance. Due to contract requirements, candidates must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents (green card holders) to be eligible.
