REPORTS TO:Building Principal, District Administration
JOB GOAL:To support the lead teacher in maximizing student achievement and individualized growth by providing targeted academic and behavioral reinforcement.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesInstructional Support- Assist the special education teacher in implementing individualized education programs (IEPs), behavior plans, and instructional activities.
- Support students in functional academics, communication, vocational tasks, social skills, and independent living instruction.
- Provide one-on-one and small-group assistance during classroom lessons and activities.
- Reinforce instructional strategies and accommodations as directed by certified staff.
- Supervision of community-based instructional activities.
- Drive students in district-approved vehicles to and from community instruction sites, vocational placements, recreational activities, and appointments as assigned.
- Support students in applying functional and life skills within real-world community settings.
Student Support and Personal Care- Assist students with toileting, hygiene, dressing, feeding, mobility, and other activities of daily living as needed.
- Implement safe lifting, positioning, and transfer procedures for students requiring physical assistance.
- Lift, transfer, or support students and classroom materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
- Maintain student dignity, confidentiality, and safety during all personal care activities.
- Support implementation of behavior intervention plans and de-escalation strategies.
- Monitor student behavior and provide positive behavioral reinforcement utilizing the prompting hierarchy.
- Assist in maintaining a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment.
- Follow district procedures regarding crisis intervention and student safety.
Data Collection and Collaboration - Collect and record accurate student data related to academic progress, behavior, communication, daily living skills, and IEP goals.
- Maintain documentation as directed by the supervising teacher and district requirements.
- Communicate observations and concerns regarding student performance or behavior to certified staff.
- Collaborate effectively with teachers, therapists, administrators, transportation staff, and families.
- Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development as required.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in accordance with district policies and state/federal regulations.
Note: The responsibilities may include other duties as assigned, as the responsibilities listed above represent a majority of the tasks, though not an exhaustive list.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:Part-time, up to 30 hours per week on school days when students are in attendance. Institute days as requested by the administration.
EVALUATION:One written evaluation per year and every other year after three consecutive years of employment. Evaluations completed by the principal.
