TITLE: School Nurse
QUALIFICATIONS: Professional Educator License: Endorsement as a School Nurse**or requirements as outlined by Illinois Administrative Code 226.160 for purposes of Medical Reviews Registered Professional Nurse licensed in Illinois, current CPR certification?.
REPORTS TO: Executive Director and/or Assistant Director of Special Education and Program Administrator
FUNCTION: SOWIC school nurses work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and parents to provide health services to children ages 3-21 years in the school environment. They support the educational process by supporting the health of students. They may be assigned to serve an individual student on a 1:1 basis at any time when intensive medical support is required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Planning and Preparation
1. Complete and file documents required by SOWIC and health departments.
2. Develop and implement student health plans.
3. Maintain medical records for SOWIC students including required records of immunization and health examinations.
4. Analyze data, solve problems, and communicate complex medical information clearly to diverse audiences?.
B. Classroom Environment
1. Acts as a resource to students, parents, and staff and students regarding health related information.
2. Provides health education.
3. Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases.
4. Capacity to lift, transfer, and physically assist students; to bend, reach, and stand for prolonged periods?.
5. Travel between cooperative programs and member district schools.?
C. Instruction
1. Complete Medical Reviews as part of a student's evaluation or re-evaluation for special education services
2. Evaluate and assist students with medical or health issues.
3. Develop and implement Individual Health Care Plans
4. Administer medications, non oral nutrition, and specialized treatments; maintain medication logs.
5. Communicate with parents regarding illnesses or accidents in school.
6. Conduct vision, hearing, and other mandated screenings with follow up.
7. Provide health education, wellness initiatives, and training on topics such as Heimlich maneuver, blood borne pathogens, and emergency response?.
D. Professional Responsibilities
1. Follow school policies with students, parents, and staff.
2. Participate in trainings in order to maintain professional skills and knowledge.
3. Practice in ways that are consistent with legal, ethical, and professional standards.
4. Perform related duties as assigned.
5. Participate in staff development and school improvement activities in order to maintain professional growth.
6. Participate in events outside of the regularly scheduled work day such as orientation, open houses, or conferences.
7. Performs other duties as assigned by the SOWIC administration.
8. Demonstrate the ability to perform physical tasks associated with job.
9. Demonstrate the ability to perform activities that utilize the necessary technology tools available including web -based data systems.
10. Maintain accurate, confidential health records consistent with state and federal law.

E. Evaluation
Formal and informal observations and conferences shall occur as needed or desired by the professional staff member or Executive Director of SOWIC, Assistant Director, and Program Administrator and shall be an ongoing process.
* Starting Salary - $50,320 (includes stipend of $10,000/year)
