Professional writing refers to the creation of clear, effective, and purposeful written communication used in the workplace or for business purposes. This can include reports, proposals, emails, manuals, press releases, and other documents intended for a specific audience. Professional writers focus on clarity, conciseness, and correct formatting to ensure the message is understood and achieves its intended goal. It's an essential skill in many industries, including business, government, education, and media.

What are professional writing jobs?

Professional writing jobs include roles in creative writing, journalism, and as a novel or book author. As a professional writer, you can work with one company or as a freelancer, and your duties and responsibilities vary. You may write creative copy for an advertising firm or produce technical documents for a business. If you work in broadcasting or journalism, you may write and research a news story or create copy for on-air talent. You can also ghost-write books for companies. In general, you provide relevant and engaging content to publish in physical or digital formats. Research is an essential part of most writing jobs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Writer, you need excellent command of language, strong research abilities, and a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Collaboration usually involves sharing drafts, receiving feedback, and participating in revision cycles to refine the text. Writers are expected to communicate effectively, remain open to constructive criticism, and adapt their writing style as needed. This teamwork not only enhances the quality of the final product but also helps writers expand their knowledge and improve their craft.

Job description

Position Summary

Perforce Software is seeking a strategic, technically proficient, and results-driven Content Marketing Manager to lead content marketing efforts for the Static Analysis product line โ€“ Perforce QAC and Perforce Klocwork. In this role, you will own the full content lifecycle โ€“ from strategy and planning to execution and optimization โ€“ creating high-performing content that drives awareness, engagement, and pipeline growth.

Working closely with Product, Demand Generation, Engineering, and other crossโ€‘functional partners, you will define and execute a content roadmap aligned to business goals and buyer journeys. This is a highโ€‘impact role requiring strong technical and editorial skills, a deep understanding of SEO, and the ability to craft compelling content that resonates with technical and business audiences alike.

Requirements
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Creative Writing, Marketing, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in content marketing or professional writing, ideally within the software or technology sector.
  • Proven ability to craft compelling narratives that engage technical and executive audiences.
  • Strong understanding and handsโ€‘on experience with modern SEO strategies and tools.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized, detailโ€‘oriented, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to turn complex technical topics into clear, engaging, and persuasive content.
  • Comfortable working in a fastโ€‘paced environment with crossโ€‘functional teams.
  • Positive, collaborative attitude with openness to feedback.
  • AI Fluency โ€“ Skilled Prompter (Advanced Foundation / Early Proficient) โ€“ Leverages generative AI tools (e.g., Jasper, Copilot) to craft and iterate on outcomeโ€‘driven prompts, validating outputs against business context, and applying emerging AIโ€‘driven search and discovery trends to scale content while maintaining brand voice.
Responsibilities
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to deeply understand product capabilities, differentiators, and roadmap.
  • Develop and refine product positioning, messaging, and value propositions for technical audiences.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive content roadmap across marketing channels and funnel stages, tailored to key buyer personas.
  • Apply modern SEO and AIโ€‘driven best practices to content strategy: identify keyword opportunities, uncover content gaps, and optimize existing and new content to improve search visibility and inbound traffic.
  • Collaborate with product experts to generate highโ€‘quality thought leadership and educational content such as blog posts, white papers, eBooks, and webinar topics.
  • Develop content plan to support integrated marketing campaigns.
  • Work alongside designers to ensure creative assets align with the intended voice, tone, and visual direction.
  • Review, proofread, and edit content to ensure clarity, consistency, and brand alignment.
  • Measure content performance and use insights to refine strategies for continuous improvement.
Benefits

Additionally, this position is eligible for benefits including, but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, retirement benefits, life insurance, wellness programs, total time off, and other employee perks that may be offered by Perforce from time to time. The actual offer will depend on a number of factors including, but not limited to, a candidateโ€™s education, skills, qualifications, depth of experience and other relevant business considerations. Perforce reserves the right to amend or modify employee perks and benefits at any time.

All employees are expected to demonstrate AI fluency appropriate to their role and level, including responsible use of AI tools, sound judgment, and adherence to company AI governance and security policy standards.
