What is professional kickball?

Professional kickball is an organized sport where athletes compete in kickball games at a competitive or semi-professional level, often as part of leagues or tournaments. The game is similar to baseball but uses a large rubber ball that is kicked instead of hit with a bat. Professional kickball players may play for teams, participate in national competitions, and sometimes receive sponsorships or prize money. The sport has grown in popularity with organizations like the World Kickball Association helping to standardize rules and promote events. While it's not as mainstream as other professional sports, it offers a fun and competitive environment for skilled athletes.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

At Hudson Guild, our COMPASS after-school program is seeking a passionate and energetic Sports Activity Specialist to lead engaging sports and recreational activities for students in grades K-5. The ideal candidate understands that sports are more than just games, they are tools for youth development, character building, and community connection.

This role plays a vital part in creating a safe, structured, and inclusive environment where young people can remain physically active, strengthen social skills, and build self-confidence. The Sports Activity Specialist will foster teamwork, leadership, resilience, and positive peer interactions while ensuring that every child, regardless of skill level, feels valued and supported.

As a key member of the Chelsea-Elliot/ CRC programs at Hudson Guild, the Sports Activity Specialist will help promote healthy lifestyles, reinforce positive behavior, and serve as a mentor and role model. By creating meaningful and engaging experiences, this position contributes to a program culture that supports not only physical growth but also social-emotional development and a strong sense of belonging within the community.

Who This Role Is Ideal For:

This position is ideal for individuals who believe in the power of sports to strengthen communities, mentor youth, and promote healthy lifestyles. It is a great fit for coaches, aspiring educators, recreation leaders, and youth development professionals who are passionate about making a positive impact in children's lives.

The ideal candidate enjoys working with elementary-aged youth, thrives in an active environment, and understands how to use sports as a tool to build confidence, teamwork, and character. This role is also well-suited for individuals pursuing careers in education, physical education, social work, community programming, or related fields who are looking to gain meaningful, hands-on experience in a community-based setting.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with elementary-aged children required.
  • Background in coaching, recreation, physical education, or youth development preferred.
  • Strong in lesson planning, group management, and communication skills.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Reliable, positive, and committed to serving the community.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and facilitate structured sports and physical activities for elementary-aged youth.
  • Teach fundamental skills in sports such as basketball, soccer, kickball, group games, and fitness activities.
  • Foster teamwork, leadership, and positive sportsmanship.
  • Create an inclusive environment that supports youth of varying abilities and backgrounds.
  • Ensure student safety through active supervision and adherence to program policies.
  • Set up, maintain, and organize equipment and activity spaces.
  • Support positive behavior using youth development best practices.
  • Maintain athletic equipment, and collaborate with program staff.

EXPECTED HOURS/TYPICAL SHIFT:

Part-Time | Afternoons (from 2:30 PM - 5:30 PM)

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position takes place in a dynamic after-school program environment serving elementary-aged youth. Activities occur in gymnasiums, playgrounds, classrooms, and outdoor recreation spaces. The Sports Activity Specialist will work in an active setting that requires frequent interaction with children, staff, and program participants.

The role requires maintaining awareness of student safety at all times while managing groups of children during structured sports and recreation activities. Work may include both indoor and outdoor environments and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions when activities take place outside.

The Sports Activity Specialist must be comfortable working in a high-energy setting with moderate noise levels and must be able to adapt activities based on space availability, student needs, and program schedules.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to actively participate in and demonstrate sports and physical activities.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, run, and move for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift, carry, and set up sports equipment weighing up to 25-30 pounds.
