What Do Professional Engineers Do?

A professional engineer uses mathematics and science to create safe and efficient buildings, machines, and applications. Engineers typically specialize in a particular field, such as aerospace, mechanical, or structural engineering. Your job duties vary depending on your area of expertise and employer but may include creating plans, designing machinery, or building skyscrapers. This career often involves a combination of office and field work. Frequent travel is an additional job requirement for many professional engineering jobs. Long hours and overtime work are also expected to meet deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Professional Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Engineer, you need a solid grasp of engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and a degree in engineering, typically complemented by a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, or project management tools, along with ongoing continuing education, is often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and project management abilities help engineers deliver effective solutions and collaborate with diverse stakeholders. These skills and qualifications ensure engineers can design safe, efficient systems and maintain high professional standards in complex technical environments.

What are some common challenges Professional Engineers face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Professional Engineers often juggle several projects at once, which can present challenges in prioritizing tasks, coordinating with diverse teams, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Effective time management and clear communication are essential to handle shifting deadlines and resource allocation. Collaborating closely with project managers, clients, and other engineers helps maintain project momentum and quality, while regular progress reviews ensure that no critical detail is overlooked.

What are Professional Engineers?

Professional Engineers (PEs) are licensed engineers who have met the education, experience, and exam requirements established by their state or country. They are legally authorized to sign off on engineering projects, offer their services to the public, and take responsibility for the safety and integrity of engineering work. Becoming a PE typically involves earning an accredited engineering degree, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, gaining relevant work experience, and passing the Professional Engineering (PE) exam. The PE license signifies a high standard of competence and ethics in the engineering profession.

What is the difference between Professional Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectProfessional EngineerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsRequires PE license, degree, work experience, examRequires degree, possibly fundamentals exam, but not license
Work EnvironmentDesign, review, sign off on projects, often in consulting or engineering firmsDesign, analysis, manufacturing, and testing in various industries
Industry UsageLicensed in engineering projects, legal responsibilityCommonly employed in manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and more

The main difference between a Professional Engineer and a Mechanical Engineer is that the PE is licensed and authorized to sign off on engineering projects, ensuring legal and safety standards are met. Mechanical Engineers typically hold the necessary education and experience but do not have licensing requirements unless they pursue PE licensure. Both roles work closely in engineering fields, but the PE designation signifies a higher level of responsibility and legal accountability.

Job description

Mechanical Project Engineer

Affiliated Engineers, Inc. (AEI) is a leading, multidisciplinary consulting engineering firm and collaborative community of over 800 employees who plan, design, and deliver high-performance, innovative, and holistic engineering solutions โ€” positively impacting society and advancing humankind.

Recognized in the Top 20 Engineering Firms and Top 3 Science and Technology Firms since 2000 by Building Design + Construction Magazine, AEI is dedicated to enhancing public health and improving patient outcomes, advancing revolutionary biomedical research, and enabling the next generation of scientific discovery and technological innovation through remarkable design and award-winning projects.

From collaborating with the California Air Resources Board to transform air quality in the world's largest, zero net energy emissions testing facility to creating human-centric, technically advanced clinical environments that elevate communities โ€” such as Healthcare Design Magazine's 2022 Design Showcase Winner, Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Venice, Florida โ€” our work reflects the highest standards in sustainable design practices.

As a Mechanical Project Engineer in our Atlanta office, you will help us empower our clients to achieve energy-efficient building solutions, save global environments, and create a better, greener future for all.

Here's why we need you:

In this role, you will be responsible for the engineering design process on assigned projects within a particular discipline. You will develop innovative and unique engineering solutions to align with project, client, and project partner's needs, and lead the discipline team in implementing the solutions.

Expertise of our most successful Mechanical Project Engineer:

  • BSME/BSAE (or other engineering discipline with applicable experience).
  • 8+ years of experience designing HVAC building systems for research, healthcare, or higher education facilities.
  • Professional engineering registration preferred.
  • Proficiency in computer operation for engineering design programs (i.e. Revit MEP, AutoCAD, Navisworks) preferred.

Effective skills to help you flourish:

  • Strong spoken and written communications skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Quick technical comprehension and motivation focused on client outcomes.
  • Able to effectively prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Effective working individually and within team environments.

Our dedication to you:

  • AEI passionately invests in our brilliant talent by allowing for personal and professional growth through supporting clients like NASA; the National Institutes of Health and Cone Health System; the US Department of Homeland Security and US Department of Energy; and Stanford University and the California Institute of Technology.
  • Our flexible and collaborative work environment demonstrates our dedication to employee appreciation and collective commitment to excellence.
  • We provide the opportunity to serve the greater good of humanity through work on cutting-edge, state-of-the-art projects like Promega Corporation's Kornberg Center, The University of Arizona's Biomedical Sciences Partnership Building, AbbVie's West Coast Oncology Hub, and BioMed Realty's Gateway of Pacific.
  • Our culture encourages professional development while adhering to a set of core values that drive company and team decisions. Our commitment to these values โ€“ innovation and expertise, integrity, communication, quality, responsibility, opportunity, and growth โ€“ informs both project decisions and behavior amongst colleagues and clients.
  • An exceptional benefits package (health, dental, vision) and a year-end bonus based on company profits, individual responsibility, and performance.

We provide the tools and a support system to ensure a thriving career. If this environment and opportunity to work on world-changing projects align with your goals, we would be thrilled to meet you.

Come and collaborate with us!
