What is a professional contract?

A Professional Contract job is a temporary work arrangement where an individual is hired for a fixed period under specific terms. These contracts are common in industries such as IT, consulting, healthcare, and finance. Professionals work on a project or service basis, often with defined deliverables. Unlike full-time employees, contract workers may not receive benefits like health insurance or paid leave. However, they often have greater flexibility and may negotiate higher hourly or project-based rates.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a professional contract manager?

A professional contract manager's daily tasks often include drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contract terms, as well as monitoring contract performance and ensuring compliance with legal and organizational standards. They regularly liaise with legal, procurement, and project management teams to resolve any contractual issues that arise. Additionally, contract managers maintain detailed records and may be involved in risk assessment and mitigation activities. This hands-on involvement ensures contracts are clear, effective, and properly executed to support organizational objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the professional contract position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a professional contract management role, candidates typically need expertise in legal frameworks, contract negotiation, and risk assessment, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in business, law, or a related field. Familiarity with contract lifecycle management (CLM) software and standard legal documentation is commonly required, and certifications like Certified Commercial Contracts Manager (CCCM) or Certified Professional Contracts Manager (CPCM) can be advantageous. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to manage multiple priorities are key soft skills for excelling in contract management. These competencies ensure accurate drafting, compliance, and successful collaboration between internal teams and external partners.

Job Summary
El Paso County Department of Human Services is seeking a Contract Specialist who thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume environment and enjoys variety in their day-to-day work. No two days look the same in this role - you'll juggle multiple contract types across programs like Adoptions, Child Care Assistance, and Foster Care, constantly shifting priorities and problem-solving on the fly.
Responsibilities include document drafting, vendor and partner communication, and contract oversight, including data and performance tracking.
This isn't a role for someone looking for routine, predictable work. It's built for a self-starter who can prioritize effectively and pivot quickly between tasks - all while keeping sight of the bigger picture: every contract and every payment connects back to real services for adults, families and children in our community. This is a mission-critical role that keeps agreements moving, payments accurate, and providers and families well-supported.

  • Get energized by juggling multiple priorities rather than a single, repetitive task list

  • Adapt quickly when priorities shift
  • Bring experience in contract management, administration, or oversight
  • Want your work to have a direct, visible impact on families and providers
