Summary:

Reporting to the production planning manager, the Production Planner is responsible for developing and maintaining detailed production schedules that support customer demand while optimizing manufacturing capacity, inventory levels, and material availability. Working closely with Manufacturing, Procurement, Customer Service, and the Master Scheduler, the Production Planner ensures production plans are executed efficiently to achieve on-time delivery and operational excellence.

Essential Responsibilities:

Production Planning

  • Develop and maintain detailed production schedules based on the master production schedule, customer demand, inventory levels, and manufacturing capacity.
  • Release and manage production orders to support daily manufacturing operations.
  • Monitor production progress and adjust schedules to address changing priorities, equipment downtime, or material shortages.
  • Coordinate production priorities with manufacturing supervisors to ensure efficient workflow and schedule adherence.

Material Planning

  • Work closely with Procurement and Purchasing to ensure raw materials and components are available to support production schedules.
  • Monitor material shortages and proactively communicate risks to stakeholders.
  • Recommend schedule changes to minimize production disruptions due to supply constraints.

Inventory Management

  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels while minimizing excess inventory and work-in-process (WIP).
  • Monitor inventory accuracy and identify opportunities to improve inventory performance.
  • Support cycle counting and inventory reconciliation activities as needed.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Customer Service, Sales, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Quality to communicate schedule changes and production priorities.
  • Support new product launches, engineering changes, and production transitions.
  • Escalate production risks and capacity constraints to the Master Scheduler and Production Planning Manager.

Continuous Improvement

  • Analyze planning data to improve schedule stability, production efficiency, and customer service.
  • Participate in Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate planning parameters within the ERP/MRP system.

Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Business, Industrial Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • 2  plus years of production planning, scheduling, manufacturing, or supply chain experience.
  • Experience using ERP/MRP systems in a manufacturing environment.

Required Skills

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of production planning, inventory management, and capacity planning.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems (Epicor, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, JD Edwards, or similar).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data analysis.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-through.
