As of Jul 5, 2026, the average hourly pay for production painter in the United States is $20.79, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.31 and $22.60 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What jobs will no longer exist in 2030?

Production painter roles may decline by 2030 due to automation, digital printing technologies, and advances in robotics that can perform painting tasks more efficiently. Jobs involving manual painting in manufacturing or construction are increasingly being replaced by automated systems and specialized machinery, reducing the need for human painters in some industries.

Why is Gen Z struggling to get jobs?

Production painters may face challenges in securing jobs due to high competition, limited entry-level positions, and the need for specific skills such as attention to detail and familiarity with painting tools. Additionally, some employers prefer candidates with prior experience or certifications, which can be a barrier for younger applicants entering the field.

What does a production painter do?

A production painter applies paint, coatings, or finishes to surfaces such as walls, machinery, or vehicles in manufacturing or industrial settings. They prepare surfaces, mix paints, operate spray guns or brushes, and ensure quality standards are met, often working with safety equipment and following specific instructions. Attention to detail and knowledge of painting techniques are essential for this role.

What is the difference between Production Painter vs Commercial Painter?

AspectProduction PainterCommercial Painter
CredentialsHigh school diploma, OSHA safety training, possibly painter certificationsSimilar credentials, often OSHA safety training and painter certifications
Work EnvironmentFactories, manufacturing plants, large-scale production facilitiesCommercial buildings, offices, retail spaces
Employer & IndustryManufacturing companies, industrial facilitiesConstruction companies, painting contractors
Job FocusApplying paint efficiently for large quantities, maintaining production schedulesDecorative and protective painting of commercial spaces, attention to detail

Production painters primarily focus on large-scale, efficient painting in industrial settings, while commercial painters work on decorating and protecting commercial buildings. Both roles require similar skills and certifications but differ in work environment and job focus.

What is the highest paid painting job?

In the painting industry, specialized roles such as industrial or commercial painters often earn higher wages than residential painters. Additionally, lead painters or those with advanced skills in decorative or specialty finishes can command higher salaries, especially with experience and certifications. Overall, project managers or supervisory roles in large-scale painting projects tend to have the highest pay within the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Production Painter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Production Painter, you need proficiency in surface preparation, paint application techniques, and a strong understanding of safety protocols, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with spray guns, sanding equipment, paint booths, and sometimes certifications in hazardous materials handling or OSHA safety are typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and reliability are crucial soft skills for delivering high-quality finishes and meeting production deadlines. These skills ensure the consistent production of visually appealing and durable products while maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by Production Painters, and how can they be addressed?

Production Painters often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent finish quality under tight deadlines, ensuring proper surface preparation, and safely handling paints and chemicals. These challenges can be managed by adhering to standardized procedures, using personal protective equipment, and communicating effectively with team members to coordinate work schedules. Continuous training and attention to detail are also important to prevent errors and maintain safety and quality standards in a fast-paced production environment.
