A product merchandiser’s duties are to develop sales strategies for retail locations to improve overall sales. As a product merchandiser, your responsibilities include visiting stores or working in a retail outlet, collecting and analyzing visual data, conducting customer surveys, and determining how a location can improve its sales. From your analysis, you can develop new schematics or a plan-o-gram which is a chart of a retail shelf which helps the store owner better improve sales through changing the way they display products or utilize space to increase customer engagement.

Familiarity with inventory management software, planogram tools, and handheld scanning devices is commonly required. Excellent communication, time management, and problem-solving abilities help you build effective relationships with store staff and adapt to changing retail environments. These skills ensure products are optimally displayed, inventory is accurately maintained, and sales targets are met in dynamic retail settings.

Job description

Help Bring Thoughtful Design to Life at Room & Board.

At Room & Board, great design is about more than how a product looks. It’s about how it is made, how it functions, the value it brings, and ultimately how it helps our customers create homes they love.

As our Merchandising & Product Design Coordinator, you’ll be part of bringing new Room & Board products to life—from early ideas and research through development and launch. Working alongside our Merchandising & Design category leaders and Vendor Management partners, you’ll help coordinate product development, research products and trends, create technical and visual documentation, evaluate product details, and prepare new products for introduction.

This is a great opportunity to build your career in product design and development while gaining exposure to furniture, textiles, materials, manufacturing, merchandising, and the full product development lifecycle. If you bring design curiosity, strong organization, attention to detail, and an interest in how great products are created, we’d love to meet you.

This role is part of our Merchandising & Design team and reports to the Merchandising & Design Manager/Director.

Share Your Work: Please include a portfolio, website, or examples of your design work with your application to help us better understand your design and technical skills. You may include a link on your resume or upload your work as a separate attachment.

Why Room & Board?

As a 100% employee-owned company, every eligible staff member shares in our success through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Ownership isn't just part of our benefits—it shapes how we work together. As employee owners, we think long-term, support one another, and take pride in creating exceptional experiences for our customers and each other.

Here, you'll join a collaborative culture where your ideas matter, your work has a direct impact, and your contributions help strengthen our people, our business, and the experiences we create for our customers.

Work Location: 4600 Olson Memorial Highway Golden Valley, MN 55422

This role is hybrid, working onsite Monday through Thursday and remotely on Friday. Please note: We are not considering fully remote candidates for this position.

You’ll share your talents in the following ways as a Merchandising & Product Design Coordinator:

The goal is to show the role of the product life cycle: coordinate, research/explore, design/document, evaluate and launch.

  • Bring products from concept to launch. Partner with Merchandising & Design and Vendor Management teams throughout the product development lifecycle, coordinating development activities, action items, key milestones, and timelines to keep projects organized and moving forward.
  • Explore products, trends, and possibilities. Conduct competitive research, pricing and value assessments, material exploration, and trend analysis to help inform product and design decisions.
  • Turn design ideas into product details. Create and maintain product specifications, technical documentation, 3D models with CAD software, drawings, visual presentations, and other resources that communicate design intent and support product development.
  • Evaluate the details that create a great product for our customers. Participate in sample reviews and product testing, considering materials, construction, functionality, quality, value, and the overall customer experience.
  • Keep products moving toward a successful launch. Review customer-facing product information for accuracy, consistency, and alignment with Room & Board standards, and support product education, internal communications, and resources that prepare our staff members and customers for what’s new.

Additionally, you'll bring the following experience and demonstrated skills as a Merchandising & Product Design Coordinator:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, or a related field.
  • We welcome recent college graduates and early-career professionals with relevant experience in product design, product development, merchandising, or a related discipline.
  • Strong organization and project coordination skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, details, and deadlines.
  • Experience with CAD and design tools such as SolidWorks, Rhino, Fusion 360, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar programs.
  • An understanding of the product design and development process, along with familiarity with furniture materials, manufacturing, and construction. Exposure to hardline materials such as wood and steel and/or textiles such as upholstery, woven fabrics, rugs, and pillows.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong visual, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • A collaborative and curious approach, with a passion for design, customer experience, and learning about new products, materials, and industry trends.

What you’ll find working here as a Merchandising & Product Design Coordinator:

  • Salary: $61,000 – $71,000/yr., depending on experience.
  • Benefits that focus on holistic well-being. The whole person matters, not just the one who shows up for work. That’s why we invest in holistic well-being that supports and encourages you to live a full life. Besides a competitive paycheck, we offer benefits to help you thrive in every aspect of life. That includes three weeks of paid vacation, a generous 401(k) match, profit-sharing and more. As a 100% employee-owned company, staff members working 1,000 hours or more in a 12-month period are eligible to participate in our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
