What does a product manager do in a non-profit organization?

A Product Manager in a non-profit organization is responsible for developing, improving, and overseeing programs, services, or digital products that align with the organization's mission. They coordinate with stakeholders, gather requirements, prioritize features, and ensure that projects are delivered effectively and efficiently. Unlike in for-profit companies, their focus is often on maximizing social impact, engagement, and sustainability rather than revenue.

How does a product manager in a non-profit organization balance stakeholder needs with limited resources?

As a Product Manager in the non-profit sector, you'll often need to prioritize projects by carefully considering the impact on beneficiaries, organizational mission, and resource constraints. This involves frequent collaboration with program teams, donors, and leadership to align product features and timelines with available funding and staff capacity. Navigating these challenges requires strong communication and negotiation skills, as well as creativity in leveraging partnerships and volunteer support. The work environment is typically mission-driven and collaborative, with an emphasis on transparency and accountability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product manager in a non-profit organization, and why are they important?

To succeed as a Product Manager in a non-profit, you need strong project management, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement skills, often supported by a background in business, nonprofit management, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like project management software (e.g., Asana, Trello), CRM systems, and data analysis platforms is typically required. Exceptional communication, empathy, and adaptability help you collaborate with diverse teams and understand beneficiary needs. These skills enable you to effectively develop products or services that advance the organization's mission and maximize social impact.

Senior Product Manager, Grantseeker

Fluxx

Job description

Fluxx is looking for a strategic, systems-thinking Senior Product Manager to own and evolve our Grantseeker platform.ย

We are looking for people who are curious, tenacious, candid, and have a bias toward action. We welcome diverse perspectives and encourage you to apply if you think you can bring value to our team, even if your experience doesn't perfectly match the job description.

This is a full-time exempt position based in Manhattan, New York.ย  Candidates must be interested & willing to work in the office at least three times a week.ย

About Fluxx:
At Fluxx, our mission is to be the leading collaborative grant management platform in our global communities. We build technology that drives positive impact by helping foundations, government agencies, and nonprofits streamline their grants management process - on both the grantmaking and grantseeking side - helping to accelerate impact across the communities we serve.

Today, Fluxx supports a global community of 500+ customers who collectively manage and distribute more than $39B in grants annually.

About Fluxx Grantseeker:

Grantseeker was originally launched by Fluxx in 2017 to help nonprofits manage the grantseeking process-a market traditionally underserved by grants management software. After serving more than 3,000 nonprofits, the platform was strategically divested in 2023, rebuilt as Grantseeker Pro for larger nonprofit and public sector organizations, and re-acquired by Fluxx in November 2025.

Today, Grantseeker helps nonprofits, higher education institutions, and government organizations manage grant portfolios, deadlines, budgets, reporting, documents, and compliance in one platform. Combined with Fluxx Grantmaker, it delivers a complete end-to-end solution for organizations that both award and receive grants.

The opportunity:

This role owns Grantseeker's product direction at a genuine inflection point - having been re-acquired by Fluxx. Grantseeker has real traction, a durable data asset, and a newly dedicated product and engineering team - and it also has a two-platform architecture to reconcile, a free-to-paid conversion motion to sharpen, and an unrealized strategic advantage in being the only Grantseeker platform owned by a major grantmaker platform.

You will be the person who decides what Grantseeker becomes over the next several years. This is a builder's role, not a caretaker's.

What you'll do:

  • Own the roadmap. Set and defend a 12-18 month product strategy grounded in customer evidence, funnel data, competitive reality, and commercial goals and keep the org aligned to it.
  • Resolve the platform question. Grantseeker Classic and Pro run in parallel. Own consolidation end to end -feature parity, migration tooling, customer communication, sunset timeline - balancing speed against long-tenured customers' trust.
  • Sharpen the product-led motion. Own activation, conversion, retention, and expansion as product metrics. Find where free accounts stall, build what converts them, and decide what sits above/below the paywall.
  • Win competitive migrations. Own import tooling, data mapping, onboarding, and the first-week experience that determines whether a migrated account survives.
  • Connect funders and seekers. Turn Fluxx's two-sided position into a shipped product - data flow, reduced duplicate entry, shared visibility - partnering with the Grantmaker team on shared data models.
  • Build on the data asset. Turn Grantseeker's public filing data into better matching and applied AI that saves grant writers real hours, with honest confidence/provenance signals.
  • Run the practice. Write clear specs, groom the backlog, run discovery (interviews, usability, win/loss, ticket mining), and ship on a predictable cadence across design, engineering, and go-to-market.

What success looks like:

  • First 90 days: 25+ customer conversations (including churned/lost), a Classic/Pro consolidation recommendation, mapped drop-off points in the free-to-paid funnel, and a written, socialized roadmap with explicit non-goals.
  • First 12 months: Two-platform question resolved with migration underway, measurable activation/conversion gains, one shipped capability only Fluxx could build, and a discovery-to-delivery cadence that runs without you.

What you bring:

  • 8+ years in software PM with real revenue ownership of a B2B SaaS product.
  • Direct product-led growth experience: freemium tiers, self-serve onboarding, activation/retention instrumentation.
  • A track record of hard prioritization calls - including saying no with reasons attached.
  • Genuine data fluency; you build your own funnel views rather than outsourcing your understanding of the numbers.
  • Strong written communication (specs, memos, decision records) and experience shipping in tight, iterative cycles with design and engineering.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and an early-team environment.

Strong plus:

  • Domain experience in grants management, nonprofit technology, fundraising or development operations, higher ed research administration, or public sector grant compliance.
  • Experience consolidating multiple products or codebases onto a single platform, including customer migration.
  • Experience with competitive displacement and migration tooling.
  • Applied AI/ML product work, especially search, matching, recommendation, or document generation.
  • Multi-sided platform or marketplace experience.
  • Background working with or inside a nonprofit, foundation, or grantmaking institution.

Salary:

Fluxx is committed to fair, transparent, and equitable compensation practices. We use a market based approach that considers cost of labor by geographic region, along with company size and industry benchmarks.
