What Do Product Designers Do?

A product designer creates products for companies based on marketability and customer need. As a product designer, your responsibilities go far beyond aesthetics. You must consider all aspects of behavioral economics that can influence consumer choices. That includes any factors that can affect sales and future development. Your duties include meeting with your client to discuss what they want, conducting market research to determine what the end user wants, and creating a product design that a customer is easily able to use and likely to buy. This process can be time-consuming, as it takes excellent analytical skills to balance marketable aesthetics with functional usability.

How does a Product Designer typically collaborate with engineers and product managers during the development process?

Product Designers work closely with engineers and product managers throughout the development lifecycle. They participate in cross-functional meetings to ensure design feasibility, communicate user needs, and iterate on feedback. Designers often create prototypes and user flows, which are shared with engineers for technical input and with product managers to align on business goals. This collaborative approach ensures that the final product is both user-friendly and technically viable, while also meeting project timelines and objectives.

To thrive as a Product Designer, you need a strong foundation in user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design, visual communication, and problem-solving, typically supported by a degree in design or a related field. Proficiency with design tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, and prototyping software is essential, along with familiarity with user research methods. Strong collaboration, empathy, and communication skills help Product Designers gather user feedback and work effectively with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating user-centered products that are both functional and visually appealing, ensuring a positive impact on business goals.

Is UX a difficult job?

Product designers and UX professionals often find the role challenging due to the need for strong problem-solving, user research, and collaboration skills. The job requires understanding user needs, working with design tools, and adapting to project requirements, which can be demanding but also rewarding for those with a passion for user-centered design.

Job description

CompassX is a boutique business and technology consulting firm. We help Fortune 500 and high-growth clients deliver their most strategic initiatives, from enterprise transformations to digital and data-driven projects. With over 15 years of proven results, we've expanded across industries including financial services, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, consumer products, and quick service restaurants.
We are honored to be recognized as a three-time winner of Consulting Magazine's Best Boutique Firms to Work For, and previously recognized as a "Best Place to Work" in Southern California and one of INC.'s 5000 fastest-growing private companies in the U.S.
We are seeking a Solution Designer who acts as the "human-centered structurer of complexity."
You are the first line of discovery, responsible for taking messy, fragmented business requirements and transforming them into structured, implementation-ready artifacts. You aren't just making things look good - you are building the blueprint for the future of operational efficiency.
In this role, you will lead the charge in mapping journeys and designing intuitive workflows in Figma Make. You will sit at the intersection of UX and business logic, ensuring that every design you produce is technically viable and ready for downstream ingestion into our AI tools. This is for the analytical thinker who loves to simplify the complex and lead clients through the fog of transformation.
High preference will be given to candidates who are based in Georgia to occasionally co-locate with our team members there. There may also be some travel requirements depending on the client.
We are currently set up to employ individuals who reside and work from the following states: California, Washington, Texas, Oregon, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Georgia. We will also consider candidates from other surrounding states.
What You'll Do
  • Lead cross-functional discovery workshops and conduct deep-dive stakeholder interviews.
  • Conduct user research and synthesize findings into structured lifecycle and workflow models.
  • Identify process gaps, inefficiencies, and breakdowns to propose innovative solutions.
  • Design operational workflows and intuitive UX/UI interfaces specifically within Figma Make.
  • Ensure all design outputs are cleanly structured for seamless ingestion into Emergent/AI tools.
  • Collaborate with AI Leads and Integration Leads to validate the technical feasibility of designs.
  • Advocate for usability and adoption within complex B2B environments.
  • Translate qualitative insights into clear, actionable requirements and flows.

What You'll Bring
  • Advanced experience in UX/UI design for heavy-duty operational or enterprise workflows.
  • Mastery of process mapping and journey mapping techniques.
  • Proficiency with design tools, specifically Figma Make and Miro.
  • A strong "systems awareness" of CRM, CPQ, and ERP environments.
  • The ability to identify AI-enabled workflow opportunities while respecting data constraints.
  • Proven track record of creating implementation-ready designs that require minimal rework.
  • Excellent workshop facilitation skills and the ability to align stakeholders.
  • A senior consultant profile with a strong analytical and problem-solving mindset.

Benefits
  • Competitive salary with performance-based bonus
  • PTO, holidays, and sabbatical program
  • Health, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Retirement plan with company match from day one
  • Learning and professional development support
  • Small-firm culture with direct access to leadership

$130,000 - $160,000 a year
We would also be open to contractors on a 1099/C2C basis.
Our consultants say CompassX is a place where they can truly find their own path. As part of a smaller firm, they see the impact of their work, have an identity, and know their voice matters. They value the freedom to take the reins of their careers, shape their client work, and maintain a direct line to leadership.
With CompassX's focus on serving local Southern California clients, consultants not only build lasting relationships but also see the results of their work in the communities where they live.
At CompassX, you won't just follow a path - you'll create one.
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
