Product Design Engineer I information

What does a Product Design Engineer I do?

A Product Design Engineer I is an entry-level professional who assists in designing, developing, and testing new products or improving existing ones. They typically work closely with senior engineers, utilizing CAD software to create models and prototypes, conducting research, and performing tests to ensure products meet quality and safety standards. Their role often involves collaborating with other departments, such as manufacturing and marketing, to ensure the product design is feasible and aligns with customer needs. This position is ideal for recent engineering graduates looking to gain experience in the product development process.

What types of projects and team collaborations can a Product Design Engineer I expect in their first year?

As a Product Design Engineer I, you will often work on supporting senior engineers with design and development tasks, such as creating 3D models, drafting technical drawings, and conducting basic prototype testing. You can expect to be part of cross-functional teams that include manufacturing, quality assurance, and marketing professionals, which provides valuable exposure to the full product development process. Early projects may include improving existing products, assisting with new feature integration, and resolving design issues identified during testing. Regular collaboration and feedback from more experienced engineers will help you quickly build your technical and teamwork skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Product Design Engineer I, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Design Engineer I, you need a solid background in mechanical or product engineering, strong CAD modeling abilities, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and FEA simulation software, as well as knowledge of design for manufacturability, is typically required. Creative problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for success in this role. These skills enable engineers to develop innovative, manufacturable products that meet user needs and business goals.

  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings.
  • Build and evaluate prototypes to validate functionality, manufacturability, and overall performance.
  • Partner with operations teams and manufacturing vendors to ensure production schedules remain on track.
  • Analyze data from laboratory testing and manufacturing builds to support engineering decisions.
  • Support root cause investigations and product builds through occasional domestic travel to manufacturing sites.
  • Design and engineer products that balance performance, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and quality.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, industrial design, operations, and external manufacturing partners throughout product development.

Requirements
  • Bachelor''s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 8+ years of mechanical product design experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently in ambiguous environments.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD modeling and engineering documentation.
  • Experience designing consumer electronics, retail fixtures, or similar hardware products.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers throughout the product development process.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Plastic and metal part design
    • Material selection
    • Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
    • Design for Assembly (DFA)
    • Statistical tolerance analysis
    • Functional dimensioning
    • GD&T
  • Experience integrating connectors, batteries, electronics packaging, PCBAs, and other component modules.
  • Ability to quickly understand existing projects and effectively contribute with minimal onboarding.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with cross-functional engineering and supplier teams.
  • Ability to travel domestically as needed.

Education
  • Bachelor''s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field required.
