Job description

The Strathcona Wilderness Centre is a premier year-round outdoor recreation destination offering trail experiences, Nordic skiing, overnight accommodations, campsites, special events, and public recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

As the Services Operations Coordinator, you will lead the operational delivery of the Centre, overseeing trail and site maintenance, outdoor recreation infrastructure, equipment and asset management, operational projects, customer experiences, and frontline operations staff. Working as part of the Centre leadership team, you will foster a culture of safety, service excellence, and continuous improvement while ensuring the Centre's facilities, trails, amenities, and outdoor spaces remain accessible, welcoming, and operationally ready throughout the year.

This role is ideal for a leader with experience in parks, trails, outdoor operations, recreation facilities, or municipal operations who enjoys balancing hands-on operational oversight, team leadership, and exceptional customer service.

This posting is for 1 temporary full-time position up to 4 months

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the Strathcona Wilderness Centre site, including park and facility maintenance, trail operations, outdoor recreation infrastructure, equipment, and public-use spaces to ensure a safe, welcoming, and high-quality visitor experience
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to improve service delivery through the planning and coordination of outdoor recreation services, bookings, events, and community partnerships
  • Provide hands-on leadership and supervision to a diverse team of operators, labourers, facility staff, contractors, volunteers, and seasonal employees, including recruitment, training, scheduling, coaching, and performance management
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee maintenance activities across trails, outdoor amenities, facilities, equipment, and recreation assets, ensuring operational readiness, safety, regulatory compliance, and service excellence year-round
  • Manage and support trail and Nordic operations, including cross-country ski area services, trail grooming activities, winter recreation infrastructure, rental equipment, and special events that enhance community outdoor recreation opportunities
  • Collaborate with internal partners, contractors, and operational teams to deliver maintenance programs, infrastructure improvements, capital projects, and site enhancements that support long-term sustainability and visitor experience goals
  • Foster a culture of exceptional customer service by ensuring staff are equipped to respond to visitor needs, resolve issues effectively, and create positive outdoor recreation experiences for all users of the Centre
  • Lead operational planning and resource management activities, including workforce allocation, equipment utilization, asset management, procurement, and budget monitoring to maximize service delivery and operational efficiency
  • Identify opportunities to improve operational practices, maintenance programs, trail services, and outdoor recreation experiences through innovation, continuous improvement, and industry best practices
  • Act as a member of the Centre leadership team, responding to operational challenges, emergent maintenance issues, weather impacts, safety concerns, and customer service situations while supporting strategic branch and departmental priorities


Qualificationsand Skills:

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in parks, outdoor recreation, municipal operations, landscape maintenance, trail operations, facility operations, or a related field, including leadership responsibilities
  • Experience leading maintenance and operations teams responsible for public-facing outdoor facilities, parks, trails, or recreation infrastructure
  • Knowledge of trail systems, outdoor asset maintenance, equipment management, contractor oversight, and seasonal operations
  • Strong leadership, customer service, and problem-solving skills with the ability to balance operational priorities, staff supervision, and community expectations
  • Experience managing operational budgets, resources, equipment, and maintenance programs
  • Commitment to workplace safety and experience applying OHS legislation, safe work practices, and risk management principles
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and respond effectively to changing operational demands, emergent issues, and weather-related challenges


Conditions of Employment:

  • Submission of Satisfactory Criminal Record Check  
  • Current Standard First Aid,CPR, andAED Certification  
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's licence and submission of a 5-year Driver's Abstract with less than 7 demerits  
  • Candidates must be available to participate in a rotating weekend schedule that includes both Saturdays and Sundays based on operational needs
