General Purpose

The College of Engineering is seeking a Biological Engineering Laboratory Technician to support undergraduate teaching and research laboratories. Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, the successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the safe, effective, and efficient operation of biological engineering laboratories while providing technical expertise to faculty, staff, researchers, and students. This position contributes directly to student learning, research excellence, and the continued advancement of the College's teaching and research facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Manage the day-to-day operation of undergraduate teaching and research laboratories.
  • Prepare, maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair specialized laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Promote and maintain a strong laboratory safety culture by ensuring compliance with University policies and health and safety regulations.
  • Support faculty, researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students by providing technical expertise, equipment training, and assistance with laboratory activities and experiments.
  • Assist with the development of laboratory procedures, instructional materials, equipment procurement, inventory management, and laboratory improvements.
  • Participate in departmental committees, outreach activities, and special projects supporting the College of Engineering.

Requirements

The successful candidate will possess:

  • A three-year diploma in Biomedical Engineering Technology or a related discipline.
  • Several years of relevant laboratory experience, preferably supporting teaching and research in a post-secondary, research, or industrial environment.
  • Experience maintaining, calibrating, and troubleshooting scientific instrumentation and laboratory equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory safety practices, biological sciences, and technical laboratory procedures.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation is considered an asset.
