Process Simulation information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Process Simulation position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Process Simulation, a strong background in chemical engineering, process modeling, and analytical thinking is essential, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Expertise with simulation software such as Aspen HYSYS, CHEMCAD, or MATLAB, and familiarity with process control systems, are highly valued, along with relevant certifications. Effective communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills help professionals convey complex concepts and work efficiently with multidisciplinary teams. These qualifications are crucial for creating accurate process models, optimizing operations, and supporting evidence-based decision-making in industrial environments.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in Process Simulation?

A typical day in Process Simulation often involves developing, testing, and refining process models to optimize manufacturing or chemical processes. You’ll collaborate with engineers, plant operators, and project managers to gather data, validate simulations, and ensure alignment with production goals. Regular responsibilities may include running simulations on specialized software, analyzing results, and presenting findings and recommendations to stakeholders. The role tends to balance independent analytical tasks with team-oriented problem-solving, providing both technical challenges and opportunities for cross-functional communication.

What is a Process Simulation job?

A Process Simulation job involves using software tools to model, analyze, and optimize industrial processes in industries like chemical, manufacturing, and energy. Engineers in this role create virtual models to test different scenarios, improve efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure safety. They work with simulation software such as Aspen Plus, HYSYS, or MATLAB to predict system performance before physical implementation. This helps companies make data-driven decisions and improve overall process reliability.

Job description

Job Description

DUTIES: Conduct discrete events simulations of vehicle production systems including process equipment and material delivery equipment throughout various phases of new vehicle programs to assess and improve throughput. Use CDraw2 and Plant Simulation software to model both dimensional and non-dimensional scenarios that accurately reflect real-world production processes and equipment. Ensure consistency, reliability, and accuracy in simulation results. Interpret the data to propose solutions aimed at improving machine efficiency, automation equipment functionality, and overall operational performance in a cost-effective manner. Work closely with Manufacturing Engineers, Material Integration, Conveyor Engineers, Plant Floor Systems, Layout Integrators, and technical Subject Matter Experts to appropriately scope and define simulation requirements. Focus on design optimization, ensuring new and existing manufacturing systems are both efficient and scalable. Compare throughput simulation models with plant layouts to ensure accuracy. Identify critical elements for each manufacturing process (e.g., number of pallets, carriers, buffers, automation, material flow/delivery) and select appropriate modeling approaches (e.g., dimensional vs. non-dimensional, 0D, 2D or 3D, animated vs. static). Provide clear, detailed results reports and simulations for vehicle programs to Manufacturing Leadership. This includes experimenting with variables, generating standard reports for standard processes, generating custom reports for non-standard experiments and new processes, and documenting lessons learned. Support Vehicle Manufacturing Plants in identifying bottlenecks in production and collaborate to develop innovative solutions to overcome those bottlenecks in a cost-efficient way. Supervise a team of 5 Material Flow Simulation Engineers to balance workload and assignments, monitor project progress and manage simulation requests by coordinating intake, resources, and timelines to ensure successful execution. Track and meet short and long-term deadlines while keeping organized amidst varying projects and multi-plant assignments. Serve as a Subject Matter Expert, provide mentoring and training to team members to enhance their skills and knowledge in throughput and material flow simulation modeling. Collect, maintain, update, and validate the performance data set for GA equipment and material delivery vehicles. Oversee the migration of legacy simulation models into Plant Simulation software. This will involve programming and developing customized library objects and software tools to expedite model conversion, creation and updating. Drive the Digital Twin vision in GM Path to Virtual to an integrated simulation of processes and material flow in a dynamic modeling to enable model validation, experimenting, and connectivity in real time. Supervises five (5) Material Flow Simulation

Engineers. 15% domestic travel required. Hybrid Work Policy - 3 days In-office, 2 days remote - Must be able to report to local office. Multiple positions available.

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, or related field of study and Five (5) years of experience as a Manufacturing Engineer, Industrial Engineer, or related role. Five years of experience with: Manufacturing engineering in a production environment; Discrete event simulation software: C-Draw2 and/or Siemens Plant Simulation; Throughput Improvement Process (TIP), methods and tools; and Application of Theory of Constraints to improve manufacturing processes. Three years of experience with: Advanced programming in Siemens Plant Simulation; Working in Vehicle or Global Propulsion Systems (GPS) manufacturing facilities; Modeling advanced conveyor logic; Interpreting the layouts to find relevant information; and Materials Flow Process to validate a process and optimize material delivery routes including automated material delivery equipment. Two years of experience with: Collecting, maintaining, updating, and validating the dataset. One year of experience with: AutoCAD software.
