What is a process simulation engineer?

Process Simulation Engineers are professionals who use advanced computer modeling and simulation software to design, analyze, and optimize industrial processes, particularly in fields like chemical, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing. They create virtual models of production systems to predict performance, troubleshoot issues, and propose improvements before implementation in the real world. Their work helps companies increase efficiency, reduce costs, ensure safety, and comply with environmental regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a process simulation engineer?

To thrive as a Process Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical or process engineering, proficiency in mathematical modeling, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation software such as Aspen Plus, HYSYS, or MATLAB, as well as knowledge of process control systems, is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you interpret complex data and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure accurate process optimization, improved system performance, and successful project outcomes in industrial environments.

What are some typical challenges a process simulation engineer faces when integrating simulation models into existing operations?

A common challenge for Process Simulation Engineers is ensuring that simulation models accurately reflect real-world plant operations, which often involves dealing with incomplete or outdated process data. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as operations, process design, and IT, is crucial for gathering accurate information and validating models. Additionally, integrating simulation results into operational decision-making can require effective communication to bridge the gap between technical modeling and practical application. Successful engineers are adept at troubleshooting discrepancies and adapting models to evolving process requirements.

What is the difference between Process Simulation Engineer vs Chemical Process Engineer?

AspectProcess Simulation EngineerChemical Process Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Chemical Engineering or related field; proficiency in simulation softwareBachelor's or Master's in Chemical Engineering; often includes process design experience
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, engineering firms, manufacturing plantsRefineries, chemical plants, R&D labs
Industry UsagePrimarily in process design, optimization, and simulationProcess design, plant operation, process improvement
Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

The Process Simulation Engineer focuses on creating and analyzing process models using simulation software to optimize chemical processes. In contrast, the Chemical Process Engineer is involved in designing, developing, and improving chemical manufacturing processes, often working directly on plant operations. Both roles require a strong background in chemical engineering and share overlapping skills, but their primary responsibilities and work environments differ slightly.

Job description

Are you passionate about using innovative simulation technology to solve complex manufacturing challenges. Join our world-class 3D Simulation Team where you'll leverage advanced virtual modeling tools to revolutionize how we design, validate, and optimize robotic manufacturing operations.
In this role, you'll create high-fidelity virtual environments that mirror real-world operations using plant simulation and process simulation software. Through detailed discrete-event modeling, you'll analyze production capacity, optimize facility layouts, and validate material flows to drive plant-level decisions that enhance operational efficiency

You'll conduct virtual builds, validate assembly processes, and perform ergonomic assessments to help us design and establish robust manufacturing processes. These capabilities help transform how we approach manufacturing challenges - dramatically reducing risks and costs while maximizing productivity.
This position offers unique opportunities to impact multiple facets of manufacturing innovation. You'll collaborate with process engineers, design teams, and operations partners to deliver simulation solutions that drive operational improvements and influence product and process design decisions

If you're excited about combining technical expertise with practical problem-solving to shape the next generation of manufacturing processes, we want to hear from you.
Key job responsibilities
- Create and validate high-fidelity 3D models using plant simulation software to analyze production capacity, optimize facility layouts, and improve material flows
- Develop detailed process simulations to verify assembly sequences, validate ergonomics, and identify potential design for assembly issues before physical implementation
- Conduct comprehensive simulation studies to evaluate and optimize manufacturing processes, including tool clash analysis and cable routing validation
- Partner with process engineering teams to validate new production processes and layout changes through virtual modeling
- Perform scenario planning and sensitivity analyses to support operational improvement initiatives and contingency planning
- Generate data-driven recommendations through simulation outputs to enhance manufacturing efficiency and reduce implementation risks
- Develop and maintain simulation best practices, templates, and standard work to improve team productivity
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and present simulation findings that drive decision-making
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance simulation capabilities
- Foster a culture of inclusion and knowledge sharing across the organization
