As of Aug 21, 2026, the average yearly pay for process simulation engineer in Michigan is $80,202.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $64,900.00 and $89,800.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a process simulation engineer?

Process Simulation Engineers are professionals who use advanced computer modeling and simulation software to design, analyze, and optimize industrial processes, particularly in fields like chemical, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing. They create virtual models of production systems to predict performance, troubleshoot issues, and propose improvements before implementation in the real world. Their work helps companies increase efficiency, reduce costs, ensure safety, and comply with environmental regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a process simulation engineer?

To thrive as a Process Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical or process engineering, proficiency in mathematical modeling, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation software such as Aspen Plus, HYSYS, or MATLAB, as well as knowledge of process control systems, is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you interpret complex data and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure accurate process optimization, improved system performance, and successful project outcomes in industrial environments.

What are some typical challenges a process simulation engineer faces when integrating simulation models into existing operations?

A common challenge for Process Simulation Engineers is ensuring that simulation models accurately reflect real-world plant operations, which often involves dealing with incomplete or outdated process data. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as operations, process design, and IT, is crucial for gathering accurate information and validating models. Additionally, integrating simulation results into operational decision-making can require effective communication to bridge the gap between technical modeling and practical application. Successful engineers are adept at troubleshooting discrepancies and adapting models to evolving process requirements.

What is the difference between Process Simulation Engineer vs Chemical Process Engineer?

AspectProcess Simulation EngineerChemical Process Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Chemical Engineering or related field; proficiency in simulation softwareBachelor's or Master's in Chemical Engineering; often includes process design experience
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, engineering firms, manufacturing plantsRefineries, chemical plants, R&D labs
Industry UsagePrimarily in process design, optimization, and simulationProcess design, plant operation, process improvement
Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

The Process Simulation Engineer focuses on creating and analyzing process models using simulation software to optimize chemical processes. In contrast, the Chemical Process Engineer is involved in designing, developing, and improving chemical manufacturing processes, often working directly on plant operations. Both roles require a strong background in chemical engineering and share overlapping skills, but their primary responsibilities and work environments differ slightly.

Job description

Dematic is seeking a Simulation Engineer to join our team in Grand Rapids, MI; Atlanta, GA; Plano, TX; or Milwaukee, WI, with a hybrid work schedule that combines on-site collaboration and remote flexibility.
You'll help design the future of warehouse automation by developing discrete-event simulation models that validate automated material handling concepts before implementation. Partnering with Solution Engineers, Project Managers, Sales teams, and customers, you'll evaluate system performance, analyze operational data, and provide insights that drive solution design and customer decisions.
You'll use simulation and 3D modeling tools, including AutoMod, to assess and optimize automated systems. You'll conduct simulation experiments, interpret results, and clearly communicate recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences.
The ideal candidate has experience with simulation modeling, strong analytical and statistical skills, and proficiency in Python or another structured programming language. Experience with material handling, logistics, warehouse automation, AutoMod, Plant Simulation, or similar tools is highly valued.
If you enjoy solving complex problems, working with data, and helping bring innovative automation solutions to life, we'd love to hear from you.
