Process Safety Engineer - Clinton, IA
This is an exempt level position.
Position Summary:
A Process Safety Engineer is responsible for ensuring that industrial processes operate safely and efficiently by identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks associated with hazardous materials, equipment, and operations. The role focuses on preventing incidents such as fires, explosions, chemical releases, and other process-related accidents through systematic safety management and engineering controls.
The Process Safety Engineer works closely with operations, maintenance, and design teams to integrate safety principles into all stages of a facility's lifecycle-from design and commissioning to operation and decommissioning.
The Clinton Iowa Plant, located in Clinton, IA, consists of 7 departments, onsite cogeneration and water treatment facilities, and employs ~735 Plant Operations Colleagues and an additional ~300 Contractors.
Reports to Safety Manager.
Job Responsibilities:
Risk Assessment and Hazard Analysis
  • Conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) such as HAZOP, What-If, FMEA, LOPA, and other risk assessment methodologies.
  • Monitor, evaluate and report PSM performance at the facility and advise management on further improvements, working collaboratively with the Health & Safety Center of Expertise in the North American region to align on PSM Programs and Goals.
  • Identify potential hazards and evaluate the consequences and likelihood of process failures.
  • Recommend and implement risk mitigation strategies.
Safety Management Systems
  • Develop, implement, and maintain Process Safety Management (PSM) programs in compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119, API, ISO, CCPS guidelines).
  • Ensure that safety policies, procedures, and standards are up to date and effectively communicated.
Design and Engineering Support
  • Provide process safety input during design reviews and modifications of equipment and systems.
  • Ensure that safety considerations (e.g., relief systems, containment, instrumentation, interlocks) are properly integrated into process designs.
  • Review and approve process safety documentation (P&IDs, cause & effect diagrams, safety instrumented systems).
Incident Investigation and Root Cause Analysis
  • Participate in or lead investigations of process safety incidents.
  • Identify root causes and develop corrective and preventive actions.
  • Share lessons learned across the organization.
Compliance and Auditing
  • Conduct internal audits and inspections to verify compliance with safety standards and regulations.
  • Prepare reports and documentation for regulatory agencies and company management.
  • Monitor and track corrective actions from audits and incident investigations.
Training and Awareness
  • Develop and deliver process safety training programs for operations and maintenance personnel.
  • Provide PSM training to different layers of plant leadership and engineers at the facility.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and awareness throughout the organization.
Performance Monitoring and Continuous Improvement
  • Establish and track process safety performance indicators (leading and lagging).
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives in process safety management.
  • Benchmark best practices and implement improvements.
Emergency Preparedness
  • Contribute to emergency response planning and drills.
  • Ensure that safety systems and emergency procedures are effective and well-maintained

Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering or related Engineering field
Required Experience:
  • 3 years required, 5+ years preferred of PSM experience, preferably in a chemical manufacturing or agricultural processing facility and strong engineering knowledge
  • Robust experience in applying the 14 elements of PSM
