What is the difference between Process Engineers vs Chemical Engineers?

AspectProcess EngineersChemical Engineers
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, often with certifications in process optimizationBachelor's or higher in Chemical Engineering, with licensure often preferred
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, production facilities, process optimization settingsResearch labs, chemical plants, design firms
Industry UsageManufacturing, oil & gas, pharmaceuticals, food processingPetrochemical, pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, energy

Process Engineers focus on designing, implementing, and optimizing manufacturing processes within production environments. Chemical Engineers have a broader scope, including chemical reactions, process design, and research. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds, Process Engineers are more involved in day-to-day process improvements, whereas Chemical Engineers often work on process development and chemical reactions. Both roles are vital in industries like manufacturing and chemicals, but their specific responsibilities and work settings differ.

Do process engineers make a lot of money?

Process engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary by industry, experience, and location. In the United States, the median annual wage is around $75,000 to $100,000, with higher earnings possible for those with specialized skills or advanced certifications. They often work in manufacturing, chemical, or industrial settings and may receive benefits such as bonuses and health insurance.

What does a process engineer actually do?

A process engineer designs, develops, and optimizes manufacturing processes to improve efficiency, safety, and quality. They analyze production workflows, troubleshoot issues, and implement improvements using tools like process simulation and data analysis, often working in industrial or manufacturing environments. Strong problem-solving skills and knowledge of engineering principles are essential for this role.

What jobs can a process engineer do?

A process engineer designs, develops, and optimizes manufacturing processes to improve efficiency, safety, and quality. They work in industries such as chemical, pharmaceutical, food, and energy, often using tools like process simulation software and requiring knowledge of safety standards and regulations.

Key responsibilities

  • Own and develop process engineering scope throughout the full project lifecycle, including concept development, scope definition, FEED, detailed design, commissioning, and startup support.

  • Work closely with technology and commercial teams to translate Nexus technology into executable process designs and licensor-grade process packages.

  • Lead and participate in process safety and operability reviews such as HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, and relief system design.

Job description

Nexus Circular is scaling advanced recycling technology from concept to commercial reality and preparing to license that technology globally. This role is a cornerstone position responsible for translating Nexus technology into robust, scalable, and executable process designs that deliver safe, reliable, and successful plants.

This is not a traditional plant support or EPC checker role. This is an end‑to‑end process engineering leadership role, owning the process scope from early concept through startup.

What you will Own
  • Process engineering ownership across the full project lifecycle: Concept development (FEL‑0 / FEL‑1), scope definition (FEL‑2), FEED (FEL‑3), detailed design, commissioning, and startup support
  • Technology scale‑up & translation: Work closely with technology and commercial teams to convert Nexus technology into executable process designs and licensor‑grade process packages
  • Process scope definition & integrity: Develop and own:
    • Process design basis
    • Mass & energy balances
    • PFDs and P&IDs
    • Process simulations and operating envelopes
    • Equipment process datasheets and design criteria
  • Licensing & EPC interface: Support development of technology packages for external customers; act as the process authority interfacing with EPC contractors and partners
  • Process safety & operability: Lead and participate in HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, relief system design, and operability reviews from early project stages
  • Team & capability building: Establish process engineering workflows, standards, and best practices; mentor and grow future process engineers
  • Cross‑functional collaboration: Work seamlessly with controls, mechanical, piping, CSA, procurement, construction, commissioning, operations, and commercial teams
What Success looks Like
  • Clear, executable process scopes with minimal rework downstream
  • Smooth transitions from FEL → FEED → EPC
  • Strong EPC alignment and reduced technical risk
  • Successful plant startups with fewer surprises
  • Credible, bankable technology packages for customers
What we are looking for
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering
  • ~10–15 years of experience in chemical, petrochemical, refining, or advanced recycling
  • Demonstrated experience taking at least one technology/project from concept to startup
  • Strong hands‑on capability with:
    • Aspen Plus / Aspen HYSYS (or equivalent)
    • Mass & energy balances
    • PFDs, P&IDs, equipment sizing
  • Solid understanding of process safety, operability, and design standards (API, ASME, etc.)
  • Comfortable working in fast‑growth, ambiguous environments
  • A builder’s mindset: positive, collaborative, accountable, and ownership‑driven
  • Able to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non‑technical stakeholders
Why Nexus
  • Direct impact on first‑of‑a‑kind and early‑scale plants
  • Opportunity to shape how process engineering is done from the ground up
  • Exposure to technology commercialization and licensing
  • A seat at the table as Nexus scales globally

Note: The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by the incumbent. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of this position.
