What is a process engineer?

Process Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and optimize industrial processes to improve efficiency, quality, and safety in manufacturing or production environments. They analyze workflows, troubleshoot process issues, and develop solutions to enhance productivity and reduce costs. Process Engineers often work in industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and energy, ensuring processes are compliant with environmental and safety regulations. Their work is vital for maintaining smooth operations and achieving organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a process engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering, often supported by a relevant bachelor's degree and understanding of process optimization principles. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or AutoCAD), Six Sigma methodologies, and quality management systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are essential to improve efficiency, ensure safety, and drive continuous improvement in industrial and manufacturing processes.

What are some common challenges process engineers face when implementing process improvements, and how can they overcome them?

Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from team members, integrating new technologies with existing systems, and ensuring process changes meet regulatory standards. Overcoming these obstacles typically involves clear communication, involving stakeholders early in the process, thorough documentation, and piloting changes before full-scale implementation. Building strong cross-functional relationships and continuously gathering feedback also help ensure that improvements are effective and sustainable.

What is the difference between Process Engineer vs Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectProcess EngineerManufacturing Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like Six SigmaBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like Lean Manufacturing
Work EnvironmentDesigning and optimizing processes, R&D settingsOverseeing production lines, factory floors
Industry UsageManufacturing, chemical, aerospaceAutomotive, electronics, consumer goods

Process Engineers focus on designing and improving manufacturing processes, often working in R&D or engineering departments. Manufacturing Engineers concentrate on implementing and managing production on the factory floor. Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications but differ mainly in their scope and work environment.

What jobs can a process engineer do?

A process engineer designs, develops, and optimizes manufacturing processes to improve efficiency, quality, and safety. They work in industries such as chemical, pharmaceutical, food, and automotive, often using tools like process simulation software and requiring knowledge of quality standards and safety regulations.

Job description

Trueline, a major manufacturer, is seeking a Process Engineer to join its engineering team in Erie, PA. This is an onsite, hands-on manufacturing engineering role within a large-scale forged aluminum operation where you'll own process improvements, equipment projects, and manufacturing capability from the plant floor through production startup.

This is an opportunity for an engineer who likes seeing ideas become real equipment and measurable results. You'll work across forging, forming, heat treatment, machining, coating, robotics, and automation while taking meaningful ownership of capital projects and continuous improvement initiatives.

What You'll Do as the Process Engineer:

  • Support plant operations by solving manufacturing and process engineering problems directly on the production floor
  • Develop stable, repeatable manufacturing processes supported by production data and engineering analysis
  • Lead engineering projects from initial specifications and quotations through vendor selection, design, installation, commissioning, and production startup
  • Identify opportunities to reduce cycle time, scrap, waste, and manufacturing costs while improving quality and throughput
  • Prepare capital expenditure requests with supporting technical analysis, cost justification, and project requirements
  • Improve existing manufacturing processes through equipment modifications, tooling redesign, and process changes
  • Develop process improvements using Mastercam and other 3-D modeling and engineering applications
  • Support robotics, PLC-controlled equipment, and manufacturing automation in partnership with controls and maintenance resources
  • Design fixtures and tooling for new products and support procurement of new or redesigned tooling
  • Partner with Quality Engineering to maintain process capability and stability
  • Evaluate new product designs for manufacturability and define the processes required to successfully produce them
  • Research and introduce new manufacturing technologies that increase plant capability
  • Work cross-functionally with Operations, Quality, Maintenance, Engineering, suppliers, and equipment manufacturers
  • Help train plant personnel and support a culture of continuous improvement

Must-Haves as the Process Engineer:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • 5+ years of manufacturing engineering experience in a high-volume production environment
  • Hands-on experience supporting manufacturing equipment and processes
  • Experience with CNC machining process development
  • Practical knowledge of one or more relevant manufacturing processes such as forging, spin-forming, heat treating, CNC machining, coating, or paint applications
  • Demonstrated experience improving manufacturing processes using data and measurable performance indicators
  • Ability to manage engineering projects involving equipment, tooling, vendors, installation, and startup
  • Working understanding of PLC controls, robotics, and industrial automation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively across engineering, operations, maintenance, quality, and plant leadership
  • Comfortable working regularly on the manufacturing floor in an onsite plant environment

Nice-to-Haves as the Process Engineer:

  • Mechanical Engineering degree
  • Aluminum, wheel, automotive, commercial vehicle, or similar high-volume manufacturing experience
  • Forging or spin-forming experience
  • Heat treatment experience
  • Advanced CNC machining knowledge
  • Mastercam experience
  • Robotics and automation experience
  • Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma experience
  • Familiarity with ISO/IATF 16949 quality systems
  • Previous experience in a union manufacturing environment

We Offer:

  • Base salary of $100,000-$115,000 annually, depending on experience
  • Opportunity to own significant manufacturing and capital improvement projects
  • Exposure to sophisticated forging, machining, heat treatment, coating, robotics, and automation technologies
  • Onsite engineering role where you can directly see the results of your work
  • Medical coverage with PPO and HSA-compatible plan options
  • Dental and vision coverage
  • Company HSA contributions and additional matching opportunity for eligible plan participants
  • 401(k) with company matching opportunity
  • Company-paid basic life and AD&D insurance
  • Company-paid disability benefits for eligible employees
  • Employee Assistance Program and financial wellness resources
  • Participation in a broad-based employee ownership program at no personal cost
  • Opportunity to join a manufacturing organization investing in technology, capacity, and continuous improvement
