What is a process development engineer?

A process development engineer designs and plans production systems to be cost-effective, safe, and meet quality requirements for their industry. These professionals often work as part of a quality assurance team or a production management department for industrial companies, such as manufacturing or mining businesses. As a process development engineer, your job duties include reviewing the company's current production processes and designing modifications to the current system or creating new systems to increase productivity. Once you have installed or implemented the system, you make sure to test and troubleshoot it to ensure they run properly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a process development engineer?

To thrive as a Process Development Engineer, you need a solid foundation in engineering principles, process optimization, and problem-solving, typically supported by a degree in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or MATLAB), Six Sigma methodologies, and relevant industry certifications is often required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork skills help you excel in cross-functional projects and drive continuous improvement. These skills and qualities are crucial for designing efficient processes, ensuring product quality, and supporting organizational competitiveness.

What are some common challenges faced by process development engineers when scaling up from laboratory to production environments?

One of the main challenges Process Development Engineers encounter is ensuring that processes which work efficiently at a laboratory scale can be reliably and safely replicated in full-scale manufacturing. Differences in equipment size, process dynamics, and raw material variability can lead to unforeseen issues such as inconsistent product quality or unexpected safety hazards. Effective communication and collaboration with both R&D and production teams are essential to troubleshoot problems and optimize process parameters. Engineers often need to adapt quickly, apply problem-solving skills, and implement robust validation protocols to ensure successful scale-up.

Job description

About Dioxycle

Dioxycle is pioneering breakthrough carbon utilization technologies that convert industrial emissions into sustainable chemicals with unprecedented energy and cost efficiency. By displacing fossil fuels for the production of key chemicals, Dioxycle has the potential to ultimately reduce over 800 million tons of CO2 per year, representing over 2% of the world\'s emissions.

At the core of our process is a novel "carbon electrolyzer", a machine capable of using just electricity and water to convert carbon emissions back into valuable everyday essential chemicals. Our team is innovating across chemical, mechanical and system engineering to turn carbon transformation into an economically feasible, industrial reality through this completely novel technological approach. Having completed our industrial-scale electrolyzer prototype, we are now working with our chemical and downstream offtakers towards First-of-a-kind plant deployment and subsequent commercial roll-out.

We are supported by world-class funders including Bill-Gates-founded Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital and Gigascale Capital and have raised $40M to date. We operate from two centers in Paris and California (so whether you are passionate about outdoors or good food/art scenes, we have a location for you to join!)

Your Mission

Dioxycle is seeking a highly skilled and hands-on Process Development Engineer to join our team at a pivotal phase of transition from R&D to industrial piloting and early commercial deployment.

We are looking for a process engineer with real industrial-scale experience (rather than a pure R&D or academic background) who can bring a critical, hands-on, plant-minded perspective to our process design and de-risk our path to commercial scale. You will work in close partnership with our principal process engineer, splitting your time roughly 70/30 between process simulation/design and hands-on experimental work, with the experimental share increasing to roughly 50% of your time during key testing campaigns. Your responsibilities will center around:

  • Simulate, model, and optimize process flowsheets (notably using Aspen Plus) to support process design and de-risking decisions

  • Benchmark and screen candidate technologies, and engage directly with technology suppliers to identify and validate the right solutions for our process

  • Scope, follow up, and steer external technical and experimental studies run by suppliers and engineering partners

  • Contribute hands-on to pilot/skid-scale experimental campaigns (e.g. purification skids, evaporators), particularly during peak testing periods

  • Work in close, day-to-day partnership with our principal process engineer lead to translate research-stage thinking into industrially robust process designs

  • Bring an industrial/operations mindset to challenge and stress-test process choices against real plant constraints

We seek a Process Engineer who is dedicated to advancing our mission and possesses the skills outlined below. Candidates with a minimum of three years of relevant experience are encouraged to apply (experience levels up to 10-12 years will also be considered for a more senior scope). We are seeking a candidate who is based in, or open to relocating to, Paris, France.

Abilities and expertise we are looking for

  • Master\'s degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering or a related field

  • 3+ years of process engineering experience gained in an industrial setting (large industrial group strongly preferred)

    • Profiles coming from pure academic R&D, technology licensors, or EPC contractors are not the primary fit for this role

    • Profiles with R&D experience embedded within a large industrial group, particularly in a technical support-to-operations capacity, are a strong fit

  • Strong command of Aspen Plus for process simulation and optimization

  • Domain expertise in either of the following is a strong plus

    • Liquid organic chemicals (alcohols, carboxylic acids) with experience in purification and separation processes, notably distillation columns

    • Syngas handling, treatment including PSA, cryogenic separation, drying.

    • Ore refining/processing (lithium, nickel, bauxite) with experience extracting metal oxides from mined rock

  • Hands-on comfort with experimental and pilot/skid-scale work

  • Strong fluency in English, with the ability to work closely and effectively in a tight-knit technical bin\'ome

  • Good project management skills: planning, coordination, supplier follow-up, and milestone tracking

  • A genuine appetite for moving from a paper-based idea to real, industrial-scale execution

Mindset we are looking for

  • Exemplary work ethic and self-driven attitude: you get things done fast and to a high standard and you don't drop the ball

  • "Street-smart": you don't take no for an answer and will figure out a way to solve anything with the means available

  • Commitment to the mission and ambition and to creating a kind, high-performance and fun atmosphere at work (100% on-site role)

  • Passion for innovation and problem-solving attitude

  • Dedication to investing time and effort for the betterment of the team

  • Going the extra 20% that makes a good deliverable into an outstanding deliverable

  • Humble, low-ego and curious

What we have to offer

  • Unique journey: We are an early-stage company with a world-class team and a flat structure.

  • Impact: We are building a product that will reshape century-old industrial processes to build a better, more sustainable and resilient world

  • People-first: We love our people. We are excited to see one another every morning when coming to work. We choose people and they choose us to share a similar excitement.

  • Feedback over ego: We are self-improving whilst helping others grow. We are no-ego doers and we are all responsible for shaping the company.

  • International team: We are an international team made up of over 17 nationalities, and hopefully many more soon!

  • Fun: We constantly strive to cultivate a great work atmosphere and organize regular team events.

  • Competitive compensation packages

  • Generous Employee Stock Ownership plans

  • Health Insurance: Medical, dental, and vision coverage.

  • Ergonomic work stations & state-of-the-art equipment
