What is a private label product development?

A Private Label Product Development job involves creating, sourcing, and launching products that are sold under a retailer’s or company's brand rather than a manufacturer’s name. Responsibilities typically include market research, supplier negotiation, product design, quality control, and overseeing production timelines. Professionals in this role work closely with manufacturers, marketing teams, and supply chain managers to ensure the product meets brand standards and customer expectations. The goal is to develop unique, cost-effective products that differentiate the brand from competitors while maintaining profitability and quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in private label product development?

To excel in Private Label Product Development, you need expertise in product sourcing, market analysis, supply chain management, and a background in business or product development. Familiarity with tools like ERP systems, PLM software, and certifications in project management or quality assurance are often advantageous. Strong negotiation, creativity, and cross-functional communication skills help drive successful product launches. These qualifications ensure effective collaboration with suppliers, seamless product execution, and the ability to develop market-competitive offerings.

What are typical challenges faced in private label product development, and how are they addressed?

One common challenge in Private Label Product Development is managing supplier relationships and ensuring product quality meets brand standards, especially when working with international manufacturers. This is often addressed by maintaining clear communication, implementing stringent quality control processes, and developing contingency plans for supply chain disruptions. Another challenge is keeping up with fast-changing market trends, which requires frequent market research and agile development processes. Successful teams rely on cross-departmental collaboration—working closely with marketing, logistics, and sales partners—to bring innovative products to market efficiently and effectively.

About Us
EasyBuy Choice is a fast-growing cross-border trade and e-commerce company connecting leading U.S. retail channels with high-quality suppliers in China. We specialize in sourcing, product development, supply chain management, and omnichannel distribution across both retail and e-commerce platforms.
About the Role
We are building a major program to bring private-label consumer electronics products — developed with our China supply chain partners — into large US big-box retail chains, both in-store and online. We are looking for a highly professional Project Manager to own this program end to end: from supplier coordination and private-label development through retailer onboarding, compliance, logistics, and on-shelf launch. The single most important qualification for this role is proven experience taking a big-box retail program from zero to launch in the US market.
Responsibilities
• Own the full private-label program lifecycle: supplier alignment, sampling and approval, packaging and labeling compliance, production orders, inbound logistics, and retail launch.
• Lead vendor onboarding and program execution with major US big-box retailers (e.g., Walmart, Target, Costco), covering both e-commerce (.com / marketplace) and brick-and-mortar tracks — buyer engagement, item setup, EDI and supply chain system integration.
• Coordinate the China supply chain side — production scheduling, inspections, and delivery timelines — driving to project milestones. (Detailed product specifications and engineering are owned by factory and product teams; deep technical expertise is not required.)
• Manage the private-label workstream: packaging design, label compliance, GS1/barcoding, and certification documentation (UL/ETL, FCC, CA Prop 65, etc.).
• Financial oversight: build and maintain the program financial model — budgets, landed unit cost (BOM, freight, duties, channel fees), margin and cash flow projections; track chargebacks, deductions, and receivables; deliver regular financial health reports to leadership.
• Develop project plans, milestones, and risk mitigation strategies; drive execution across US and China teams and time zones.
• Report program status to senior management and lead cross-functional coordination across sales, sourcing, logistics, and finance.
Qualifications
5+ years of project management experience, including at least one program taken from zero to launch with a major US big-box retailer — both online and in-store. This is the primary qualification for the role.
• Working knowledge of US retailer vendor onboarding, routing guides, and chargeback/compliance rules.
• Strong financial acumen: able to independently build program budgets, analyze cost structures, model margins and cash flow, and read a P&L.
• Familiarity with China-based supply chains and cross-border logistics (ocean freight, customs clearance, delivery to retailer DCs).
• Fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese — this role works directly with China supply chain partners and US retail counterparts.
• Hands-on experience with private label / OEM programs.
• Authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
• PMP or equivalent project management certification.
• Experience with retailer systems such as Retail Link (Walmart) or Partners Online (Target).
• Prior big-box launch experience in consumer electronics or small appliances.
• Background or education in finance or supply chain finance.
Who You Are
• A relentless driver: strong execution and follow-through, able to align factories, retailers, and internal teams around aggressive timelines.
• Numbers-driven and detail-oriented, with a strong compliance mindset — big-box retailers are unforgiving on compliance and delivery.
• Comfortable under pressure in a fast-paced environment spanning US and China time zones.
How to Apply
  • Please send your resume to [carol@kytclub.com] with the subject line “Project Manager – [Your Name]”. Include a brief summary of a big-box retail program you launched from zero to one — the retailer, your role, and the outcome
Work Location
  • In person (Industry / Redlands, CA)
