What is a private label product development?

A Private Label Product Development job involves creating, sourcing, and launching products that are sold under a retailer’s or company's brand rather than a manufacturer’s name. Responsibilities typically include market research, supplier negotiation, product design, quality control, and overseeing production timelines. Professionals in this role work closely with manufacturers, marketing teams, and supply chain managers to ensure the product meets brand standards and customer expectations. The goal is to develop unique, cost-effective products that differentiate the brand from competitors while maintaining profitability and quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in private label product development?

To excel in Private Label Product Development, you need expertise in product sourcing, market analysis, supply chain management, and a background in business or product development. Familiarity with tools like ERP systems, PLM software, and certifications in project management or quality assurance are often advantageous. Strong negotiation, creativity, and cross-functional communication skills help drive successful product launches. These qualifications ensure effective collaboration with suppliers, seamless product execution, and the ability to develop market-competitive offerings.

What are typical challenges faced in private label product development, and how are they addressed?

One common challenge in Private Label Product Development is managing supplier relationships and ensuring product quality meets brand standards, especially when working with international manufacturers. This is often addressed by maintaining clear communication, implementing stringent quality control processes, and developing contingency plans for supply chain disruptions. Another challenge is keeping up with fast-changing market trends, which requires frequent market research and agile development processes. Successful teams rely on cross-departmental collaboration—working closely with marketing, logistics, and sales partners—to bring innovative products to market efficiently and effectively.

  • Coordinate development testing, including stability, compatibility, and performance validation
  • Ensure formulations are compatible with packaging and meet regulatory expectations prior to launch

3) Cross-Functional Supplier Management

  • Act as the primary day-to-day contact across a network of contract manufacturing partners
  • Coordinate formulation development, testing, scale-up, and technology transfer
  • Collaborate with Packaging teams to ensure formula–package compatibility and aligned timelines
  • Partner closely with Quality, Regulatory, and Commercial teams to drive execution
  • Maintain clear documentation and communicate development progress to stakeholders

4) New Product Innovation

  • Support innovation across mass retail, drug, grocery, specialty, and club channels
  • Balance innovation initiatives alongside ongoing product development priorities

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of product development experience in beauty, personal care, and/or OTC categories
  • Demonstrated experience with OTC drug products and SPF formulations
  • Strong background working with contract manufacturers
  • Proven ability to manage complex development timelines, testing programs, and budgets
  • Preferred to have experience supporting major retail customers
  • Familiarity with shelf-ready packaging and retail quality expectations
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration with Packaging, Regulatory, and Quality teams
  • Ability to travel as needed to CM locations during production runs, located mostly in the Los Angeles area.
