What are private household jobs?

Private household jobs refer to employment positions within a private residence, where individuals are hired directly by families or homeowners to provide a range of domestic services. These jobs can include roles such as housekeepers, nannies, gardeners, personal chefs, chauffeurs, and estate managers. The responsibilities vary depending on the household's needs but generally involve maintaining the home, caring for children or elderly family members, and ensuring the smooth operation of domestic life. Unlike positions in commercial settings, private household staff work in a personal, often discreet environment and may live on or off the premises.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in private household roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working in private households often face challenges such as maintaining clear boundaries between personal and professional interactions, adapting to the unique preferences of each household, and managing a diverse range of tasks. These challenges can be addressed by establishing clear communication with employers, setting mutual expectations, and staying organized with daily routines. Being flexible, discreet, and proactive in problem-solving also helps to build trust and ensure long-term job satisfaction in this environment.

Understanding these distinctions helps families find the right professional for their household needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Private Household Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Private Household Manager, you need strong organizational abilities, experience in household operations, and often a background in hospitality or property management. Familiarity with budgeting software, scheduling tools, and sometimes certifications in household management or hospitality are typically required. Exceptional communication, discretion, and adaptability are vital soft skills for managing staff and maintaining client satisfaction. These skills ensure the smooth running of high-value households, allowing principals to enjoy seamless service and peace of mind.

Job description

Do you enjoy creating order, anticipating needs and helping busy people stay organized?

We're seeking an experienced Private Household Manager to become a trusted partner to a wonderful family. This is a unique opportunity for someone who enjoys variety, takes initiative and finds genuine satisfaction in helping a busy household run smoothly.

The children are school-aged, so while childcare remains an important part of the role, the primary focus is managing the day-to-day operations of the household and keeping everything running seamlessly.

What You'll Do

Every day is a little different, but responsibilities typically include:

  • Managing the day-to-day operations of the household.
  • Coordinating schedules, appointments, vendors and household projects.
  • Supporting the children before and after school, including transportation and activities as needed.
  • Coordinating a household helper and helping prioritize daily responsibilities.
  • Assisting with meal planning, grocery shopping and household organization.
  • Running occasional errands and handling a variety of household and personal projects.
  • Communicating proactively with the family throughout the day.

What We're Looking For

The strongest candidates will have experience in roles such as:

  • Private Household Manager
  • Family Assistant
  • Executive Assistant
  • Personal Assistant
  • Estate Assistant
  • Office Manager
  • Concierge or luxury hospitality
  • Another highly organized support role

We're looking for someone who is dependable, proactive and naturally organized. You enjoy solving problems, communicate well, exercise good judgment and genuinely like helping others. You're looking for more than your next job—you'd like to become a trusted part of a family's life for years to come.

Experience managing your own household, supporting another family or coordinating the many moving pieces of a busy home or office will all be viewed as valuable experience.

Schedule

  • Full-time
  • Monday-Friday
  • Generally 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Compensation

  • $65,000-$75,000, depending on experience
  • Paid Time Off
  • Additional benefits

Why You'll Love This Role

This isn't simply a household management position. It's an opportunity to become a trusted partner to a warm, appreciative family who values open communication, mutual respect and long-term relationships.

If you take pride in making life easier for others and are looking for meaningful work where your organization, initiative and good judgment will truly be appreciated, we'd love to hear from you.
