Job description

  1. Approaches all tasks with a Customer Service approach, and continually seek ways to improve user (i.e. customer) satisfaction.  Approaches all patients and colleagues in a Customer Service manner.
  1. Performs data processing functions including but not limited to: non-patient admissions, order entry, cancellation, result entry and retrieval, add on tests and specimen storage and retrieval.
  2. Operates computer system in all assigned functions including maintenance, troubleshooting and implementation of backup systems.
  3. Answers the phone promptly, relays messages, provides accurate information to requesting parties concerning testing procedures, collection, results, or any other laboratory question.  Forwards phone call or message to appropriate staff member if unable to provide information to caller.
  4. Communicates all relevant information to technical staff regarding specimens including adequacy, test add-on, cancellations, and test priority.
  5. Delivers or mail reports.
  6. Faxes patient results upon request and in compliance with HIPAA guidelines.
  7. Calls or faxes all STAT results for tests listed on the Emergency Test List and documents the call or fax in Laboratory Computer system.
  8. Checks specimens for acceptability and special handling needs and distributes to sections for processing or testing.  Processes and distributes specimens and batches from outreach sites.
  9. Prepares and processes specimens for shipment to intra-system locations, reference labs or other institutions or special studies implemented by CCH.  Compiles necessary support documentation and makes necessary arrangements for transportation.
  10. Files reference lab reports.
  11. Checks inventory, orders stock-items and stores upon arrival.  Keeps benches stocked with the appropriate supplies.
  12. Maintains confidentiality of information according to Cape Cod Hospital’s policy and procedure. 
  13. Maintains harmonious and cooperative relations with fellow employees, medical staff, patients and guests and serves effectively as part of the Laboratory team in performing our professional Laboratory services to patients.
  14. Maintains work benches, testing areas and other work areas in a clean, sanitary and free of clutter condition for the safety of patients, guests and staff. 
  15. Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job.
  16. Collects data for QA and other projects upon request.
  17. Responsible for pre-analytic and post-analytic specimen processing (e.g. including but not limited to aliquoting (urine and blood), labeling, operating centrifuge, creating labels, prioritizing specimens, archiving and disposal of specimens).
  18. Inoculates and processes culture specimens.  Prepares these specimens for transportation to Falmouth Hospital Microbiology.
  19. Performs general cleaning (not performed by Environmental Services).
  20. Performs other LST job related duties and activities as assigned or requested. 
  21. Performs assigned tasks for limited but necessary coverage for absence of Specimen Processing Supervisor.  Receives Relief in Higher Classification for compensation of these assigned duties.
  22. Performs training of new LST personnel as assigned.  Receives Training Pay for compensation of this assigned duty.
  23. Excellent prioritization and organizational skills.
  24. Ability to work as a team member who displays a professional demeanor and is able to work effectively in a fast paced environment.

    Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
    Proficiency in using computers.
    Successful passage of Medical Terminology course OR successful passage of the CCH Medical Terminology exam.  
    Experience:
         One year recent (within the past 5 years) Phlebotomy experience or current (within the past 6 months) certificate      in Phlebotomy.
         Successful passage of the CCH LST Qualifying Exam.
     OR 
         One year recent (within the past 5 years) experience as a Clinical Associate, Unit Clerk, Diagnostic Tech, PST          FH Lab Assistant, PSA, PCT, CNA, Medical Secretary or other position that requires Lab test ordering, lab                        specimen processing, or phlebotomy or an Associate or higher degree in Medical/Clinical Laboratory Science,                  Medical Technology, Biology, Microbiology, or Chemistry, from an accredited institution.
         Successful passage of the CCH LST Qualifying Exam.
    Successful passage of Shipping of Dangerous goods/IATA certification within 30 calendar days of starting position.  Must maintain certification in accordance with federal regulations.
