What is a print pattern design?

A Print Pattern Design job involves creating original patterns and designs for textiles, fashion, home decor, and other surfaces. Designers use hand-drawing techniques, digital software, and trend research to develop visually appealing and marketable patterns. They often collaborate with product developers, manufacturers, and brands to ensure designs align with production requirements and customer preferences. This role requires creativity, technical skills, and an understanding of color, composition, and fabric properties.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in print pattern design?

To thrive in Print Pattern Design, you need a strong background in textile design, color theory, and surface pattern creation, typically supported by a relevant degree or portfolio of work. Proficiency with digital design tools such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and CAD software is essential, and knowledge of fabric printing techniques is often beneficial. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective collaboration skills help designers generate innovative patterns and work efficiently with clients and production teams. These abilities ensure that designs are both aesthetically pleasing and manufacturable, meeting client specifications and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in print pattern design, and how can they be managed?

Professionals in Print Pattern Design often face challenges such as balancing creative vision with client or brand guidelines, keeping up with rapidly changing fashion and design trends, and ensuring patterns work across various fabrics and products. Managing these challenges requires strong communication skills to understand and align with client expectations, as well as continuous learning to stay current with industry techniques and technologies. Collaboration with other designers, production teams, and sometimes overseas manufacturers is common, so adaptability and effective teamwork are vital. By anticipating production constraints and remaining flexible with their creative approach, pattern designers can deliver successful designs that are both innovative and commercially viable.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY
ALICE + OLIVIA is seeking a Technical Print Designer specializing in engineered patterns to join our Print & Concept Design team. This role sits at the intersection of creative print artwork and technical development - translating original concepts into placement and engineered layouts that are fully production-ready. You will own the journey of a print from initial artwork through repeat, strike-off, and hand-off to production partners, ensuring print developments are engineered to the garment and executed to the brand's signature standard of femininity, color, and detail. The ideal candidate is a meticulous print technician and an inventive designer in equal measure - equally comfortable engineering a print to a specific silhouette and fluent in the file preparation, color, and vendor communication that move a print from the studio to the sales floor.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Engineered & placement print design - Create original engineered, placement, border, and scarf prints designed to specific garment shapes and silhouettes, balancing artistic intent with the realities of pattern, cut, and construction.
  • Development-ready artwork - Build clean, production-ready files: set repeats, resolve seam and panel alignment, and prepare artwork so it can be executed accurately by mills and printers without ambiguity.
  • Strike-offs & lab dips - Review strike-offs, lab dips, and print proofs; mark corrections for scale, placement, registration, and color; and drive artwork to approval on development timelines.
  • Mill & vendor partnership - Collaborate with mills, converters, and print vendors on technical feasibility, minimums, and quality, translating design intent into clear, printable specifications.
  • Cross-functional collaboration - Partner closely with the design, product development, and production teams to align prints with fabric, garment engineering, and delivery calendars.
  • Archive & library - Maintain an organized, well-documented print and CAD library, ensuring version control and easy retrieval of engineered layouts and repeats.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5+ years of print design experience in apparel or textiles, with a portfolio demonstrating engineered and placement prints.
  • Proven ability to create production-ready artwork - repeats, engineered layouts, color iterations, and print-ready files.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop; experience with textile CAD systems.
  • Strong color acuity and understanding of color balance, hue levels, and colorway development.
  • Working knowledge of print methods (digital, rotary, screen) and their impact on artwork preparation.
  • Experience reviewing strike-offs and lab dips and communicating color corrections to mills and vendors.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and ability to manage multiple projects against development deadlines.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Degree in Textile Design, Surface Design, Fashion Design, or a related field.
  • Experience in contemporary women's ready-to-wear.
  • Familiarity with PLM systems for tech pack and development workflows.
  • Understanding of textile finishing as it relates to engineered placements.
