Under the general direction of the Laboratory Manager, the Medical Technologist will perform testing on medical specimens, may collect other bodily fluid specimens, label and transport specimens to the lab, input data into the computer and report results of laboratory tests in accordance with TJC, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies and procedures. Communicates with medical staff, other departments, and outside agencies while maintaining confidentiality. Position requires self-motivation, creativity, and capabilities to function in a semi-autonomous role within a fast pace and dynamic environment.
Standards of performance include ensuring adherence to proper infection control, OSHA and safety standards, assisting with the planning, development, organization, implementation, evaluation, and direction of the Laboratory department programs and activities, overseeing the work of technicians, phlebotomists or lab assistants as directed by laboratory leadership, maintaining an excellent working relationship with the medical profession and other related facilities and organizations, ensuring that all chemicals and biologicals are labeled in accordance with facility policies and procedures and regulations issued by governmental agencies or by TJC, assisting in the proper disposal of chemicals and/or biologicals in accordance with current regulations, ensuring an adequate stock of reagents and other lab supplies is on hand to meet facility needs, assisting in identifying and correcting problem areas and the improvement of services, participating and assisting in departmental studies and projects as assigned or that may become necessary, participating in continuing education, making recommendations to the Lab Manager regarding supplies and equipment, making recommendations and evaluations of new equipment and clinical procedures as requested, reporting hazardous conditions/equipment problems immediately to the Lab Manager and to maintenance, maintaining appropriate scheduled maintenance and ensuring complete equipment maintenance records, responsible for performance and evaluation of quality control and proficiency testing programs, responsible for accurately completing a myriad of medical/laboratory tests on a variety of specimen types, maintaining work area in an organized and neat manner, maintaining workflow, and proper use of equipment and reagents, requiring direct contact with patients, collection and transport of specimens, accurately reporting test results in a timely manner, and other duties as assigned.
Requirements include a minimum level of education of completion of an Associate's Degree (Bachelor's Degree preferred) in Medical Technology or closely related sciences with credit hours meeting AMT or ASCP registry and meets the Georgia requirement of a technologist as defined in DCH law Code of Georgia of a technologist Chapter 111-8-10-.06(4)(b)1-8, licensure, certification, registration as a Medical Technologist (ASCP, AMT, or equivalent), or recent graduate from an approved accredited program within the last 6 months of hire date and must be certified within 18 months of degree conferred date, two years of pertinent laboratory experience required and one year of hospital-based laboratory experience preferred, and tools and equipment used include calculator, personal computer, telephone, facsimile machine, paper shredder, copier, printer, standard phlebotomy equipment and collection devices, syringes, needles, measuring devices, a full range of laboratory testing equipment and recalibration equipment.
